Personal tutor guidance for the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

In July 2015, the University awarded its first summative HEARs to final year Plymouth undergraduate students completing their programme of studies. In May 2016, the University extended this to provide a formative HEAR to existing undergraduate and postgraduate taught (PGT) students. This enables students to see their HEAR evolving over their time at Plymouth University and is populated with academic achievement from each programme stage, as well as a range of validated extra-curricular activities. Once a programme of studies has been completed and the final award made, the formative HEAR becomes a summative document with no further changes.

The HEAR is hosted by an external company (GradIntelligence).  To view their own document, students need to activate their GradIntelligence account using their University email address. GradIntelligence are informed which students are eligible for a HEAR and they contact students by email with instructions on how to activate their HEAR account. Students can choose to share their HEAR with tutors, employers, family etc.

The role of the personal tutor in this process:

1.   Alert tutees during induction week and/or via subsequent tutorial sessions about the HEAR. More information (including a short video and a mock completed HEAR) is available.

2.   GradIntelligence will contact eligible students via their University email address, inviting them to register for a HEAR account. As a personal tutor, staff should enquire if tutees have registered and viewed their HEAR yet.

3.   New students will only see the basic HEAR document linked to their profile but students in other stages should see evidence of previous academic achievement on their programme at Plymouth and in some cases, extra-curricular achievements (see HEAR website to view list of validated activities to date). If tutees have any queries, tutors should refer them to the HEAR FAQs first of all before directing students to the HEAR email address:

4.   As part of normal personal development and professional activities, tutors typically encourage tutees to review their skill development and to identify any gaps with regards to careers plans and future aspirations. The HEAR should form part of these ongoing discussions (in conjunction with Pebblepad where used), to help review, reflect and plan.

Note: Currently, HEARs are available to students studying on most undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses at Plymouth on-campus and those on Plymouth University courses undertaken at partner colleges. Please note that postgraduate research students, some students on short courses and students studying at GSM London are not eligible for a HEAR.

Suggesting an extra-curricular activity for appearing on the HEAR

To suggest an extra-curricular activity for appearing on the HEAR, firstly ensure that it adheres to the following policy: Protocol for Recognising PU HEAR Section 6 Achievements. If it meets the criteria, then email information about the activity (including an identified key lead) to Proposals will be appraised for their suitability in terms of adding to the HEAR and the Plymouth Extra On-line Catalogue.
