Professor Alan Myers is the Associate Head of the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), University of Plymouth. He has spent over 30 years connected to teaching English as a Foreign Language. Initially, he was a teacher and then moved into consultancy, materials development and advisor on overseas military and government policy. He has undertaken courses in Swedish, Russian, French and Italian; he is a member of the British Association of Applied Linguists and the Thomas Hardy Society. Academically, he has interests in communication in English between two sets of non-native speakers as happens in aviation, military and maritime language. His doctoral research was in aviation English.
He is currently a Professor in Defence Training and Education at the University of Plymouth at BRNC, Dartmouth. His role is to advise and develop the training of overseas military for the University and for BRNC. He uses his experience in the military and working overseas and also his qualifications in applied linguistics and English. In June 2012 received his third masters degree in English language training.
