Entry requirements

You will normally require:

  • A first or upper second (2:1) degree with honours or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • An ordinary or foundation degree, a higher national or university diploma, accompanied by substantial experience in an appropriate field.
  • Provide a portfolio of work for discussion at interview.
  • If you have overseas qualifications, you can check their compatibility with the UK equivalent through NARIC, who provide an advisory service.
Partner Institutions: Applicants from our partner institutions, and those students who are already studying with us in the School of Art, Design and Architecture, will not need to provide a portfolio. Applicants from our partner institutions considering us for MA Design study will need to provide a digital portfolio of their last three projects.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English then evidence of English proficiency is required. The minimum IELTS score for acceptable English proficiency for entry is normally 6.5. For further advice on the appropriateness of overseas qualification and proficiency in the use of English, please contact our International Office at

Normally a 2:1 degree from a UK University or equivalent plus supporting portfolio of work and a 200 - 500 word draft statement of intent. But we will consider students below 2:1 if they can demonstrate a strong academic portfolio or a record of professional experience.

Candidates are interviewed before an offer is made.

IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent required for overseas students.

The University also has substantial experience in supporting mature students and welcomes applicants in this category. Applicants with APL will be considered on an individual basis according to the University Regulations Framework. Students interested in transferring postgraduate credits will be considered on merit and current University regulations regarding transfer of credits from other institutions will apply.
