  • Programme overview

  • The MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering will appeal to you if you are a design engineer. The programme provides an in-depth knowledge of specialist areas in electrical and electronic engineering underpinned by the theory and practice of modern electronics and renewable energy systems, together with the associated signal processing and embedded programming techniques. The modules have been selected to give you an even balance of essential modern areas of electrical and electronic engineering. The communications content will give you a broad grounding in communication theory and systems while the signal processing content is generally biased toward applications in communications engineering. From our experience of intensive courses, and our work with partner companies, this programme meets the current needs of electrical and electronics industry. The programme is taught in autumn and spring blocks and includes a project.

    Core modules

    • Artificial Vision and Deep Learning (AINT515Z)

      This module will provide an advanced knowledge of artificial vision systems and deep learning neural networks. It will be underpinned by current theoretical understanding of vision algorithms and deep learning neural network models. This module will also introduce the use of deep learning models and vision systems.

    • Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics (ELEC512)

      This module is designed to provide interdisciplinary training in all aspects of the emerging Nanotechnology field. It introduces techniques for developing nano-scale devices and sensor technology as well as the nano-fabrication techniques required to construct them.

    • Integrated Power Systems (ELEC517)

      This module will focus on current power systems pertinent to renewable energy. The design and performance of converters will be main focus of this module.

    • MSc Dissertation and Research Skills (PROJ518)

      You will develop a methodical approach to research that helps propose research projects that are practically realistic and academically worthwhile. A substantial project will be planned and carried out using ethically suitable quantitative and qualitative research methods. The project will be reported through a high quality, scholarly and professional write-up, either as a formal dissertation or journal paper.

    • Distributed and Interactive Communications Systems (ELEC520)

      In this module, students will develop applications involving interconnected hardware devices and software capabilities. Devices include both embedded and networked computers. Capabilities include sensor data acquisition, actuator control, and behaviour generation. The module will cover both theory and practical work, including management of code complexity, and dealing with real-time and reliability issues.

    • Intelligent Sensors and Control for Autonomous Systems (ROCO508Z)

      The module covers a range of classical and smart sensors and actuators, which can be applied in interactive and automated system, with emphasis on several key sensors. This module introduces the basic and advanced concepts of linear and nonlinear modelling analysis and design of intelligent control systems. This module has a strong hands-on component.

    Optional modules

    • The Offshore Power Station (ENGR502)

      This module will familiarise students with processes involved in the design, development, installation, operation and decommissioning of a cost-effective offshore power station. Students will get hands-on experience of industry standard design software. Factors affecting the Levelized Cost of Energy will be explored. External lecturers will provide context through presentation of up to date case studies.

    • Soft Computing Techniques for Autonomous Systems (MECH557)

      This module will develop knowledge and understanding of soft computing techniques and will explore the benefits of these in autonomous systems. The module will include seminars and guest lectures from key people from Industries and academics to share their experiences in the autonomous systems areas.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in electronic engineering or related subject. Applicants with professional experience or international qualifications will be considered individually.
Entry to the MRes is via initial entry to the MSc.
Applicants with overseas qualifications can check their comparability with the UK equivalent through ECCTIS, who provide an advisory service.

If your first language is not English then evidence of English proficiency is required. The level of proficiency that is required can vary with the type of programme for which you are applying.
The minimum IELTS score for acceptable English proficiency for entry is normally 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each element.

When to apply
Most of our taught programmes begin in September. Applications can usually be made throughout the year, and are considered until programmes are full.
Before you apply
Familiarise yourself with the information required to complete your application form. You will usually be required to supply:
  • evidence of qualifications (degree certificates or transcripts), with translations if not in English, to show that you meet, or expect to meet the entry requirements
  • evidence of English language proficiency, if English is not your first language
  • a personal statement of approximately 250-400 words about the reasons for your interest in the course and outlining the nature of previous and current related experience. You can write this into the online application form, or include it as a separate document
  • your curriculum vitae or résumé, including details of relevant professional/voluntary experience, professional registration/s and visa status for overseas workers
  • proof of sponsorship, if applicable.
