This programme will empower you to confidently meet the clinical and logistical challenges of working in complex and unpredictable situations; overseas, in low resource settings, on expedition or within your UK practice. The programme has two pathways to allow you to tailor your learning to your own specific needs. There is a leadership pathway to allow you to gain advanced knowledge and practice to become a global healthcare leader of the future. An alternate is to take the remote and rural pathway specifically gaining skills for practising as a wilderness medic in some of the worlds most isolated locations.

Course details

  • Year 1
  • The programme can be flexible to fit around your work, practice opportunities and travel overseas. The normal is to complete the full time version in one year, and the part time version in three, taking two modules per year and undertaking the dissertation in year three.

    The programme traditionally starts in September with an introductory two days. The Global Health and Project Design, Development and Knowledge transfer modules run in the autumn term, the Remote and Rural Practitioner and Leadership modules in the Spring Term. The distance learning Leadership and Innovation in practice module runs across the year.

    HML721 Advanced leadership - An in-depth study of aspects of management, leadership and innovation in healthcare, relevant to professionals seeking to lead services and organisations into the future. This will build on the themes from the Leadership and Innovation in Practice Module and develop them in the context of the current political, economic, regulatory and technological environment relevant to the global healthcare setting.

    HML712 Organisational development and culture - This module complements the leadership and innovation in practice module, and comprises an in-depth study of organisations into the 21st century with a focus on health and care. Critical study of the structure, values and cultures of organisations will be incorporated along with theory from established and contemporary OD literature.

    PDP721 Project design, development and knowledge transfer - This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills associated with the project design, development and knowledge transfer process. Students will gain practical experience of multi-disciplinary team working through problem identification and problem solving to encourage innovation and creativity in project design, development and knowledge transfer.

    PDD721DL Project design, development and knowledge transfer - This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills associated with the project design, development and knowledge transfer process. Students will gain practical experience of multi-disciplinary team working through problem identification and problem solving to encourage innovation and creativity in project design, development and knowledge transfer.

    DIS731 Dissertation - This module is the dissertation associated with the masters programme and is designed to enable students to produce a project dissertation under supervision, and to demonstrate project design, development, evaluation and synthesis skills.

Entry requirements

This programme is most applicable for medical, dental, nursing or allied health professionals or intercalating medical students between years 4 and 5 of their undergraduate course.

Normally a recognised first degree or equivalent will be required. Entrants who have acquired experience through work or other means that enables staff responsible for admissions to be confident of the candidate’s ability to succeed in the programme may also be considered, in line with QAA guidance.

If your first language is not English you will be required to provide evidence of competence in English language:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7 or above with no less than 7.0 in each category (speaking, listening, reading, & writing) will be required. Students with a first degree from the UK may still be required to take IELTS.

Accreditation of prior certificated learning (APCL) and accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL) refer to the process by which previous formal certificated learning and informal non-certificated learning can be awarded credit towards modules within the sphere of Higher Education. Credit for prior learning, whether certificated or experiential, may count towards the requirements for the named award. The maximum amount of credit for prior learning (certificated or experiential) claimed towards the award is 120 credits.  To qualify for the award of a masters degree, your dissertation must be completed at the University of Plymouth. If you are seeking credit (whether certificated or experiential), you will normally be required to apply for such credit on receipt of an offer of a place on the programme. Requests for APCL if you are already on a programme will be considered provided that you submit the request in the session before you would normally begin the module/stage for which you are seeking credit. In the case of requests for APEL, this would be at least six months prior to the beginning of the session before you would normally begin the module(s)/stage against which you are seeking credit.

Make sure you have all your supporting documents. Documents required usually include:
  • Evidence of qualifications (degree certificates or transcripts), with translations if not in English, to show that you meet, or expect to meet the entry requirements
  • Evidence of English language proficiency, if English is not your first language
  • Personal statement of approximately 250-400 words about the reasons for your interest in this course and outlining the nature of previous and current teaching experience. You can write this into the online application form, or send it as a separate attachment.
  • Two academic/professional references, confirming your suitability for the course 
  • Two passport photographs
  • Curriculum Vitae or résumé, including details of relevant professional/voluntary experience, professional registration/s and visa status for overseas workers
  • Proof of sponsorship, if applicable

You will normally receive a decision on your application within four weeks of us receiving your application. You may be asked to provide additional information, to take part in an interview (which in the case of overseas students may be by telephone or video conference) or you will be sent a decision by letter or email.

Pathways

"After gaining my medical degree I completed my foundation medical training years in North Wales. I wanted to take some time out before speciality training to pursue my interest in remote medicine, while completing my mountain leader qualification and travelling as an expedition doctor. I remember looking at the Plymouth programme initially because I was interested in finding out more about the different options within the field of expedition medicine. The global health element made it even more inviting, as was the part-time option to be flexible and do some of the learning and assignments remotely.

On completion of the programme I will have gained some significant learning experiences within this field, both research-based and practically, and worked with a variety of leaders within this area of medicine. The links that the University have with the British Antarctic Survey mean that some of my colleagues on the programme will be undertaking medical jobs at remote stations for prolonged periods of time, so it has been fascinating to hear from them about some of their experiences. I particularly enjoyed learning about some of the issues surrounding climate change and the concept of locally global healthcare during the global health module, and practising casualty evacuations outside next to our lecture room!

Plymouth has been a great and friendly city to get to know, especially when commuting by bike! Both the medical facilities and teaching are excellent and have close links with exciting projects worldwide, including the Masanga link hospital in Sierra Leone. 

In addition, I have enjoyed getting to know the surrounding area, with beautiful Dartmoor on the doorstep, and plenty of great sporting facilities to try."

Wilderness Medical Training - Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

If you have completed the Wilderness Medical Training summer ‘Expedition Medicine & Field Skills’, winter ‘Expedition Medicine Course’ in Chamonix or the Morocco Mountain Medicine Expedition course we are delighted to be able to offer you the opportunity to APL into our Global and Remote Healthcare Masters Programme.

In order to gain 30 APL credits in lieu of the undertaking the full ‘Remote Practitioner’ Module, you will need to apply for the Remote and Global Healthcare Masters Programme by the stated deadline, attend an induction and complete the assignment for the Remote Practitioner module, for which you will receive support from our tutors, within a defined time frame.

Acceptance onto the MSc Global and Remote Healthcare (which enables you to choose whether you want to progress to the full masters, or ‘step off’ after the PgCert) is subject to successful application, in line with standard Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry process. You will also need to provide a copy of your WMT course certificate at the time of registration to ensure the credits for this module are valid. This certificate should be no more than 2 years old.

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry are pleased to be able to deduct the cost of the WMT (Chamonix) programme from the course fees, resulting in a ‘top-up’ fee of £895.00.

N.B. Morocco delegates: the cost of a Chamonix course will be deducted from your admission fee.
