Course details

  • Year 1

  • The PgCert Osteopathic Sports Care provides osteopaths a structured pathway that leads to a formal qualification. 
    The programme will provide knowledge and skills required for the management of sporting injuries within clinical practice and on-field.
    A wide range of osteopathic approaches will be included and the faculty comprises of experienced osteopaths who work within the sports care field.

    Core modules

    • Concepts of Osteopathic Sports Care (BCOM7004)

      • The role of osteopathy in treatment and management of common sporting injuries • Critical review and interpretation of the case-history presented by a sporting individual • Critical review of pitch side/ on-field management of common sporting injuries • Multi-disciplinary team work and legal issues in sports care

    • Exercise and Rehabilitation (BCOM7005)

      • Physiology of exercise and tissue healing during rehabilitation process • Biomechanics and mechanisms of common sporting injuries • Principles of pre & post rehabilitation for common sporting injuries • Principles and practice of sports taping

    • Osteopathic Management of Sports Injuries (BCOM7006)

      • Osteopathic principles and management of common sporting injuries • Prescription drugs in exercise and sporting activities • Role of nutrition in exercise and sports • Psychological issues on performance during exercise and sports

The modules shown for this course or programme are those being studied by current students, or expected new modules. Modules are subject to change depending on year of entry.

Entry requirements
MOst, BSc Ost, DO, or equivalent. 
You must be working as an osteopath, and be registered with the GOsC (or the equivalent in your country). 
Work experience
You must be working as an osteopath. 
You must have a valid First Aid Certificate.
Interview
Each individual application will be assessed by the Admissions Team and all applicants who fulfil the admissions criteria will be invited for an interview.
Independent Safeguarding Agency (ISA) / Criminal Record Bureau (CRB)
If you are wishing to attend children’s or vulnerable adult’s sports clubs, you will be required to have Enhanced DBS checks.

University of Plymouth open days

You are also very welcome to attend a University of Plymouth open day, to get a flavour of the courses you can progress to from a partner college. There will however be limited information on this specific course and college.

Assessments

Learning outcomes will be assessed via:

a) Coursework essay: For example: Critically review your management of a sporting injury – 1000 word essay, fully referenced.

b) Viva Voce: A 20-30 minutes viva voce when candidates will be requested to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. For example: case-history taking skills, taping/strapping.

c) Work-based learning/reflective log: You will be required to complete 50 hours of observation/shadowing of experienced sports care practitioners and log their experience. This log will be assessed and will be awarded either a pass or refer.
