Professor James Daybell and Dr Sam Willis 'Histories of the Unexpected' book

In the summer of 2018 Professor James Daybell and the television presenter and historian Dr Sam Willis offered over 16 internships to University of Plymouth history students.

The opportunity was open to first, second and third years to work with the pair on their chart-topping Histories of the Unexpected weekly podcast, which they produce for Dan Snow. The interns worked on a range of fascinating historical topics from the history of the hand, the bubble and the orange to the history of the smile, cats and the lean, writing introductions for the episodes, hunting down images, compiling bibliographies and writing mini-blog type essays. It was fantastic working with such bright and energetic Plymouth history students, and their work will be published on the Histories of the Unexpected website:
