The Junior Academy provides instrumental music lessons and theory tuition for 12–16 year olds from the most experienced teachers in the South West of England. Members of the Junior Academy achieving the requisite standards will be en route to an unconditional offer for the BA (Hons) Music degree at the University of Plymouth where the music entry requirements are Grade 8 instrumental and Grade 5 music theory. Accomplished members who are close to achieving the required grades may also be considered for an unconditional offer.
Junior Academy members and their parents/guardians are invited to all Arts Institute performances, workshops and masterclasses. There will be additional opportunities for members to actively participate in composition and performance events and societies. The Junior Academy is a pathway toward University life, preparing members for their personal journey into musical study at higher education.
Membership is free and we welcome young musicians within the South West region (12 to 16 years) who have aspirations to study music at degree level. Funding
Instrumental lessons
The Junior Academy funding for instrumental lessons is dependent on personal circumstances. We cannot confirm students’ eligibility until we have received their funding application. There are a limited number of part or fully-funded programmes for talented pupils who meet the requirements of the funding body. Theory lessons
Each member of the Junior Academy who receives instrumental lessons will be eligible to have music theory lessons fully funded up to Grade 5 theory.
Application requirements
1. Ideal applicants will be aged between 12 to 16 years.
2. Preferably each applicant will already have achieved one instrumental grade.
Anyone who meets the above requirements may apply to become a Junior Academy member. All applications will be considered on the basis of the student’s musical achievements.
