Animal Behaviour and Welfare placement and international study
On all of our courses, you have the option to take up an approved work placement as part of your degree course.

This will take place at the end of your second year and lasts for at least a six-month.

On successful completion, you will gain the Certificate of Professional or Work Experience.

Alternatively, you may choose to take a work-based learning module working in a local host organisation alongside your other studies.

These opportunities will enrich your course and career prospects, e.g. SANCCOB, UK Wolf Conservation Trust, Jersey Zoo, London Zoo, Marwell Zoo, Paignton Zoo, Dartmoor Zoo, Hawk Conservancy Trust.

The University operates an established Study Abroad Exchange Programme and you can apply to spend the second year of your studies at a partner university in Canada or Australia or take part in the Erasmus exchange programme and study at a European university where we have an agreement.

There is also the opportunity to apply for the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP) and study at a member university in the USA.

What our students say

"Having completed an internship with The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) during an additional industrial placement year, I would highly recommend it to anybody!

It was such an amazing experience for me that it changed my entire outlook on life and broadened my knowledge of careers in the animal field.

I loved every single moment (even the tired ones), and can honestly say it was the best thing I have ever done in all of my life.
Working with seabirds and especially penguins was incredible and beyond all, extremely rewarding and fulfilling work.

As an intern on a six-month placement, you are able to gain an intense amount of experience and specific skills that will definitely come in handy in your working life within the field.

This internship is extremely hands-on and therefore provides the quickest and most effective methods of learning for most people.

SANCCOB is a professional business that is recognised worldwide for their methods and works in conserving the African Penguin. Being a part of that is incredible and I can guarantee that if you are like me, you will not want the six months to end.

They throw you in at the deep end and push you to excel so that you achieve your best and are able to have these specialist skills integrated into you in future working life.

I really feel as though I have grown and developed as a person during my time at the centre. I had the chance to work up close and personal with penguins, cormorants, gulls, pelicans, petrels, shearwaters, gannets and many more and can honestly say I would not change one minute of my time there."
