Geology graduates throughout the United Kingdom undertake their final year dissertation by completing a summer mapping project. Geological Society of London accreditation requires students at Plymouth to spend at least 28 days undertaking independent fieldwork, in the summer holidays between the second and third year of study.
Although this project is independent, we offer field supervision (typically half a day per person) to help you through the first part of your fieldwork. This training provides a set of skills unique to geology graduates including project planning and logistics, 3D visualisation, and of course the ability to create a geological map. The experience is a memorable part of any geologist's career.
Recent mapping camps have included Cyprus, Swiss Alps, France, Spain, Norway and Sweden; as well as closer to home in the Lake District, Scotland and Wales.
