  • Year 1
  • In your first year you build a solid understanding of the tourism industry, learning the principles of sustainable tourism management. You have the opportunity to study a language and gain insight to intercultural communication. You also explore different forms of tourism and identify how these are used in destination development and promotion, gaining knowledge of tourism supply and demand.

    • HTM238 Tourism, Hospitality and Events Research Methods

      This module investigates the potential contributions of different disciplines and approaches that help to explain the nature of tourism, hospitality and events management. The module examines the research methods used in investigations that focus on tourism, hospitality and events management as applied academic subjects.

    • HTM241 Tourism Venture Creation

      An introduction to business models and functions in tourism within the context of venture creation.

    • HTM248 Tourism Planning and Management

      This module examines the essential features of tourism planning in both a UK and international context, together with a comprehensive review of activities of different types of public sector and hybrid organisations. The module also features the evaluation of tourism strategies.

    • HTMP202 Career Investment Programme 2

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 2 module focuses on providing students with information on the placement year, and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for applying for placement and graduate positions. The module also includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

    • LCS200 Culture and Society 2

      This module examines a range of aspects which define Hispanic and Francophone worlds, focusing predominantly on the contemporary period. In addition, it develops a range of key skills which will support study at undergraduate level. For those students electing a languages Minor pathway, the module anchors linguistic competence through a deeper understanding of the cultural referents specific to these countries.

    • HTM216 Tourism, Development and Culture

      The importance of culture and underlying social principles are explored to aid in understanding tourism development. The module also examines the relationship between tourism and host communities with particular reference to developing countries.

    • HTM243 Festivals and Event Tourism

      To examine the importance of festivals and event tourism in relation to a tourist destination's policy and planning strategies. This will determine the value of events to the tourism industry. The module will also examine the evolution of event tourism, and discuss the authenticity dilemma of event tourism with particular reference to festivals and festival tourism.

    • HTM247 Tourism Technologies

      The module examines how technology influences and changes tourism products, operations, processes and tourist behaviour in modern society. A review of global technological trends will also be undertaken to determine the cultural significance of technology to specific tourism societies and tourism businesses.

      This module is designed for beginners in the language, or those whose previous qualification/experience is not equivalent to GCSE grade B.   • Year 2
  • In your second year of study, you develop your language skills and understanding of diverse cultures. Discover what it takes to develop, manage and promote tourism businesses or destination. Increase your understanding of destination management on a regional, national and international level, gaining insight of tourism strategy development. If you choose, you can undertake a semester or year abroad at one of our partner institutions.

    • HTMP300 Work Placement Year

      The placement year consists of an extended period of professional work experience in a relevant business organisation. It extends the student's commercial awareness and knowledge of the business environment, provides an opportunity for personal development, and equips them with the experience and skills necessary to gain suitable employment on graduation.

    • HTM312 Film, Literary and Heritage Tourism

      This module reviews the development of three significant forms of cultural tourism ¿ heritage, film and literary tourism - drawing on international examples. In doing so, it deals with a range of issues affecting the planning, development and operation of heritage, film and literary tourism, such as the concern with authenticity, the tensions between conservation and business viability, politics and propaganda, funding, interpretation and simulacra and hyper-reality.

    • HTM314 Honours Project

      The student integrates subject specific knowledge and skills to develop a specialist area of knowledge in depth and - with supervision from a subject specialist - conducts their own research investigation and reports their findings.

    • HTMP301 Career Investment Programme 3

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 3 module focuses on providing students with information on graduate options, including further study and graduate management schemes, and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for articulating and recording achievement and applying for graduate positions. The module also includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

    • LCS300 Culture and Society 3

      This module comprises a series of lectures on aspects relating to the French and Spanish speaking worlds, using sources (text, music, the media) in both the target language (for the benefit of Minor pathway students) and English. It requires independent research and analysis, with appropriate supervision.

    • ELC312 English for Global Communication

      This module is designed to develop students¿ practical ability to communicate effectively in English in international situations, their understanding of intercultural communication and their ability to reflect on and develop their skills in using English.

    • ELC314 International Business Communication

      The module is designed to help students who have English as a second language to develop and refine their ability to communicate effectively in English in the global business environment encompassing different national cultures, business practices and systems. Students will engage in a range of written and oral tasks and assessments which will develop their business communication skills.

    • ELC315 Professional and Academic Communication

      This module is designed to help students to further develop and refine their ability to use English appropriately and effectively in professional and academic contexts at Year 3. They will do this by reviewing their language development by identifying an area of weakness and adopting appropriate strategies to make progress in that area; engaging in a small research project which they will present to the class; writing an essay and practising relevant professional and academic English skills in small class groups. This course requires consistent, steady work throughout the semester.

    • HTM310 Crisis and Disaster Management in the Hospitality, Tourism and Events Industry

      This module will equip you with a sound understanding of the principles and practice of economic, environmental and political crisis and disaster management in the hospitality, events and tourism industries.

    • HTM335 Crime and Sustainable Tourism

      This module focuses on two contemporary tourism topics - crime and sustainable tourism. Included are the relationships between tourism and the environment and the principles, approaches and pitfalls to sustainable tourism management in an international context. The module also focuses on tourists and the tourism industry, and the relationships between these and crime.

    • HTM339 Leadership

      "The module allows the student to explore the role of leadership within organisations, including both the practical and theoretical aspects of leadership, and how such concepts can change over time. Through an intensive field trip activity, it enables students to further explore and reflect upon leadership theory and concepts in practice. "

    • HTM342 Business Strategy and Consultancy for the Tourism, Hospitality & Events Sectors

      This module focuses on exploring and understanding a range of theoretical approaches to developing strategies for businesses in the tourism, hospitality and events (THE) sectors and applying these principles to a live consultancy project. The learner is provided with the opportunity to gain experience of working with a business in THE industries on a consultancy basis, either in a research or strategic development setting. Learners will engage with a client business to mutually identify a suitable project and develop findings and guidelines to inform a new strategic direction.

  • Final year
  • In your final year, you develop your passion for tourism by researching a topic that excites you for your final thesis. Through the study of conceptual tourism, modules deepen your knowledge of challenges which arise in the modern tourism industry. Continue your exploration of language and culture through the study of European culture and society and your chosen language.
