"I came to Plymouth University to study navigation, very unsure of what career would lie ahead of me. I had a love for sailing and was contemplating a marine related career due to this, but looking back I couldn’t have chosen a more relevant degree for the two careers I have subsequently followed.
Being at Plymouth also gave me the opportunity to get heavily involved in yacht racing and I completed my RYA Yacht Master course. Throughout the course I built my knowledge of meteorology, oceanography and navigation amongst other skills which significantly aided me in my dream of ocean racing. When I left Plymouth I knew I wanted to give a career in yacht racing a chance and I initially raced inshore in the Mediterranean competitions on TP52s and Maxi Yachts. This led to regattas in the USA, Caribbean, south-east Asia and Australia, where I expanded my experience. I was also able to learn how to prepare and maintain the race yachts and often delivered the yachts to competitions to increase my offshore miles.
I completed my first transatlantic short-handed yacht race on-board a class 40 in 2012 (Transat Quebec- St Malo) shortly followed by a double handed class 40 race (Normandy Channel Race).
The key skills from the maritime-related degree, and specialist knowledge of satellite communications from relevant modules aided me in securing a job with Inmarsat and then rapidly integrating into my role within the Maritime Business Unit.
I am currently working in business development, where I act as a point of expertise for both internal and external customers on maritime leisure related matters, identifying commercially viable market opportunities and collaborating with colleagues and external providers to bring new products and services to the market. My job also includes the marketing strategies of the new products and identifying the future sales channel.
When I started at Plymouth University I had no concept of what an exciting and varied career was ahead of me, but my degree provided a solid path to follow in an industry which I am passionate about."
