FdA Music Technology and Production

Welcome to Petroc, one of the largest colleges in Devon, awarded 'Silver' from the Teaching Excellence Framework (July 2017) and rated 'Good with Outstanding Features' by Ofsted (November 2015). Petroc is the South West Regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre, recognised by the award of a Skills for Health Quality Mark, and plays a key part in the economic, cultural and social development of the county’s rural communities. We offer around 40 degree-level courses from foundation to BA (Hons) level across our three campus sites, making a 'degree on your doorstep' a possibility for hundreds of successful graduates to date.

    • MUTE104 Music Business

      This module concentrates on organisations involved in regulating the music business, safeguarding intellectual property and royalty collection. Lectures will introduce contract law, copyright issues, developments with music promotion/distribution through traditional means and the Internet, also entrepreneurial/freelance aspects of employment in the music industry.

    • MUTE105 Acoustics

      This module consolidates a basic knowledge of the physics of sound and applies this to musical instruments, musical systems and the environments where music is performed, recorded and configured. The physiology of hearing and psychology of sound perception are also considered. Current and historical practices with regard to the creation/alteration of acoustics will be investigated.

    • MUTE106 Recording Techniques 1

      This module explores the technical concepts of sound recording (EQ and timbre, DSP, microphone placement, dynamic processing, A/D converters, acoustics, signal path etc). It will develop the skills needed to organise recording sessions and operate the recording equipment installed in a studio environment. Students will be familiarised with the benefits/drawbacks of a range of recording methods.

    • MUTE107 Instrumental Circuitry Repair and Design

      This module develops an understanding of basic electronic circuits with specific reference to electronic instruments. It will give the opportunity to develop safe and effective habits of practical working and a logical approach to understanding and testing types of circuits commonly encountered in the music production industry.

    • MUTE111 Concert Production and Staging

      This unit introduces the student to the broad spectrum of roles necessary for successful concert production and staging. It is concerned with the organisation and management, technical requirements, set-up and rigging and the health and safety legislation and issues surrounding this area of the industry.

    • MUTE112B Developing Graduate Skills

      This module is designed to enable students to demonstrate that they have all the qualities and transferable skills necessary for appropriate academic work and employment requiring the exercise of responsibility and decision making, including the ability to relate their professional practice to underlying theory and principles.

    • MUTE201 Recording Studio Techniques 2

      This module aims to extend the technical skills learned in Mute 106. Students will use current industry practices to record a finished CD to a professional standard. They will be introduced to significant contemporary popular music recordings with a view to introducing those professional practices into their own work.

    • MUTE202 Music Workstation II

      This module is in place in order to allow students to use creatively the technical knowledge they have acquired in the first year modules. They will have the opportunity to develop further their sequencing/editing/compositional and arranging skills and be introduced to more advanced music software programmes on workstations.

    • MUTE207 Project Planning and Realisation

      This module concentrates on developing the skills necessary for the production of significant high profile professional products within the performing arts field. It involves negotiating a project brief and recognising individual roles within the overall project structure. The project can be individual or group based.

    • MUTE210 Audio Visual Techniques

      This module explores the processes involved in developing music and sound for film/TV, multimedia including gaming, web and animation from script to screen. It will introduce students to available technologies on their workstations and familiarise them with video editing, manipulation of images and the conventions of the use of sound and music to reinforce them.

    • MUTE205 Approaches to Research

      This module concentrates on developing the skills necessary for researching and producing a presentation in an area of Music, Music Technology or Production Processes. It builds on the study skills learnt in module MUTE100 and the work produced in this unit will be a portfolio comprising a combination of essays, interactive CD-ROM/DVDs, videos, or websites,. The student will negotiate subject areas and presentation options with the module leader, who will monitor the progress the progress of the project.

    • MUTE206 Managing a Record Label

      This module concentrates on utilising business knowledge gained in module MUTE104 to get an album from studio to marketplace. In the early weeks students will prepare a release date for the recordings and present appropriate marketing and press strategies to promote them. They will designate roles for the organisation of duplication plants, broadcasters, distributors, retailers, collection agencies, the creation of artwork, biographies and promotional materials.

    • MUTE208 Record Producer

      This module concentrates on the practical music, non-musical and business skills required to engage in the role of a Record/Music Producer. The students are required to experience the organisational and managerial responsibilities, technical and artistic requirements necessary to instigate and execute a recording project that could be considered for commercial release.

    • MUTE209 Interactive Audio

      This module aims to introduce students to the graphical programming environment in the context of audio manipulation. The outcome will be a portfolio of fully functional DSP objects/applications that incorporate some level of human interactivity.

    • PERF206 Event Management

      This module will introduce students to managing an event using concepts in background research, logistical requirements and organization. It will link these to preparing budgets, team communication, staging, evaluating, critically analysing as operational stages, and liaison with relevant supporting bodies. Students will stage events.
