Our four year dual field course offers the opportunity for students to be recognised in two of the three fields of nursing we offer while achieving an undergraduate master’s degree. As well as preparing students for a clinical role, in a range of healthcare settings nationally or internationally, the course is an excellent choice for those considering a career in research and nurse education, that is to say, it is a challenging option for those looking for a fast tracked career.

Key features

The MNurs course is integrated with the BSc (Hons) Nursing course hence students will follow a course of study that:

  • Ignites your passion for life-long learning with our evidence-informed modules, on a course designed to meet a diverse range of nursing career pathways.
  • Provides nursing practice in a variety of clinical settings, whilst learning collaboratively within dynamic healthcare teams.
  • Enhances and develops your nursing skills in the safe environment of the clinical skills simulation ward, under the supervision of nurse lecturers and clinical demonstrators.
In addition, a key feature of the MNurs course will be the dedicated master’s level seminar and tutorial support time that students will experience which is built around critical reflexivity (thinking deeply about the impact of our assumptions, values, and actions on others). The course cumulates in a 40 credit systematic review module that prepares students to perform as a capable and autonomous practitioner, fit for registration in two fields of nursing practice.

    • NRS410 Being an Accountable Professional

      This module will introduce students to the nursing profession, professional standards, the use of evidence and the role of social media in health care practice.

    • NRS411 Communication and Therapeutic Relationships

      This module supports students to develop basic, person-centred communication skills enabling them to engage effectively with individuals and their families/carers utilising a range of collaborative interpersonal skills and adopting therapeutic and ethical frameworks that can be applied in health and social care.

    • NRS412 Assessing Healthcare Needs

      This module introduces students to assessing health and wellbeing, it explores different models of understanding health, ill health and the interconnection between physical and mental health.

    • NRS413 Planning Nursing Care

      This module enables the student to work in partnership to plan and evaluate nursing care for a variety of health conditions and needs.

    • NRS414 Applied Human Biology Across the Lifespan

      This module will develop students' understanding of human development, key body systems and their relationship to nursing care.

    • NRS415 Providing and Evaluating Care

      This module introduces the student to the values, knowledge and skills required for nursing practice in a range of settings.

    • NRS501 Applied Pathophysiology

      Within this module, students will study the pathophysiological processes involved in commonly encountered health conditions.

    • NRS502 Introduction to Evidence-Informed Decision Making

      The module introduces students to research methodology and methods in order to develop their knowledge of the application of research-based evidence to professional practice. The module is based upon the premise that knowledge and understanding of key research designs is an essential pre-requisite of evidence-informed decision making (EIDM).

    • NRS503 Promoting Health and Preventing Ill Health

      This module aims to develop the student's knowledge and skills in relation to public health, policies and legislation. Students will explore the social, economic, political and ecological challenges that are faced in public health at an international, national and local level. The student will develop an understanding of their professional role in relation to public health.

    • NRS504 Pharmacology and Medicines Optimisation

      This module will develop students' knowledge of medications, pharmacology and working to support medication adherence.

    • NRS505 Co-ordinating Care for Complex Health Needs

      This module will develop student's knowledge and understanding of co-ordinating care for complex health needs. It will enable them to respond to the challenges of providing safe, effective, person centred nursing care.

    • NRS506 Developing Nursing Practice

      This module develops the students' values, knowledge and skills required for nursing practice in a range of settings.

  • Core modules
    • NRS601 Nursing Leadership, Management and Team Working

      This module critically explores the concepts of management, leadership and working in teams. It examines the role of the nurse to act as a change agent in response to professional practice challenges.

    • NRS602 Developing Knowledge and Skills for Evidence-Informed Decision Making

      The module is designed to extend students' knowledge around critical appraisal and the importance of research evidence to professional practice. This will be achieved through students identifying and evaluating a body of research-based evidence relevant to clinical practice.

    • NRS603 Transition to Professional Practice

      The module will provide you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to perform as a capable and autonomous practitioner, fit for registration in your field of nursing practice. The student will explore responsibility, accountability and legal aspects of their role within the contemporary health and social care context.

    • CHN601 Care of the Highly Dependent Child

      This module will develop the knowledge and skills of students in the care of critically ill infants, children and young people and their families. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a range of settings.

    • CHN602 Care of the Child and Family in the Community

      This module will enable students to develop the skills and knowledge required to undertake holistic assessment, plan and manage the support and care of individuals and families in a variety of community settings. The challenges of multidisciplinary and multiagency agency working in a community environment will be critically examined.

    • CHN603 Developing Competence in Child Health Nursing Practice

      This module will further develop the student¿s competence in a range of clinical, professional and transferable skills considered essential for safe practice and ensure that the NMC competencies are achieved.

    • NRS708 Systematic Review

      This module focuses on the appraisal and synthesis of evidence from research literature and documentary sources. Students' develop an understanding of systematic review methodology and will produce a systematic review of studies relating to an area of interest.

    • NRS709 Transition to Professional Practice

      The module will provide you the opportunity to demonNRS709strate your ability to perform as a capable, autonomous and critical practitioner, fit for registration in your field of nursing practice. 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above to include Mathematics, English, and Science. Preference is given to applicants who have obtained these grades on application. DDM Health or Science profile is preferred, but not essential. 

Access to HE Diploma
Pass a named Access to HE Diploma with 15 Level 3 credits at Merit and 30 at Distinction, including 15 in Science or Social Science.

International Baccalaureate 
30 points to include Grade 5 in one subject at Higher Level. Health or Science profile is preferred, but not essential.
English, Maths, and Science accepted within as GCSE equivalent.

Extended entry requirements

• In addition to the above, evidence of academic study within the last five years is required.
• Please note we do not accept Key Skills Level 2 in place of GCSE English.

If English is not your first language and you do not have GCSE English grade C/4 or above you will have to achieve an IELTS (or equivalent qualification) at the grade of at least 7.0 (at least 6.5 in the writing section and at least 7.0 in the reading, listening and speaking sections.).

Direct entry to year 2
If you have achieved certificated learning in addition to the entry criteria required for your programme of study, it may be possible to accredit this learning towards your chosen course. Full details on how to make an application are available on our open access MOODLE site (download details on how to access the site and submit your claim and supporting evidence). Your application will then be assessed and you will receive confirmation by email on the status of your claim.

Why we need more men to become nurses

If someone asks you to picture a doctor, it’s likely you’ll picture a man. If someone asks you to picture a nurse, it’s more likely you’ll picture a woman.

This unconscious bias is on the way to being addressed on the medical front as female medical student numbers have escalated in recent years – with women now accounting for over half of medical professionals at a training grade. Yet the amount of men training to become nurses has plateaued for decades at between 8–11%.
