Bidisha
An internationally renowned asylum campaigner and broadcaster will be among the leading literary figures at the 2015 Plymouth International Book Festival.Bidisha began writing for publications at 14, signing her first book deal two years later, and is now a Booker Prize Foundation trustee and Guardian journalist with two published novels.
She has also written extensively about asylum and refugees with her latest book – Asylum and Exile: The Hidden Voices of London – an attempt to go behind the headlines to reveal the humanity, tragedy and bravery of the individuals who have left everything to seek sanctuary in the UK.
With the global refugee crisis having been front page news in recent months, her visit to Plymouth comes at a crucial time in the asylum debate. She said:
“I have been extremely shocked at our government's reaction to the humanitarian refugee crisis. They have represented refugees as a tide, an influx, hordes of marauding aliens desperate to get to England. But this is not the case at all as 86 per cent of refugees are displaced to developing countries and there were only 12,000 asylum acceptances in the UK in 2014.
“I think everyone should go onto the UNHCR website and simply apprise themselves of the real facts and figures surrounding refugee and asylum, as well as looking at asylum charities websites which often run articles, short films and interviews with refugees, to understand the reality of being a refugee. I want to take the heat, the fear – even the patronage and heart-bleeding – out of the situation and instead see world governments behaving in a moral and correct way.”
The 2015 Plymouth International Book Festival runs from Thursday 15 October to Wednesday 21 October.
Other headline acts include bestselling authors Judy Finnigan, Simon Scarrow and Matt Haig, writer and musician John Hegley, Thurston Moore, co-founder of experimental rock band Sonic Youth, comedian and actress Helen Lederer, and whisky connoisseur Ian Buxton.
Bidisha, who will be appearing on the second day of this year’s festival, adds:
“During my talk, I'd like to open a door onto the life stories of some of the asylum seekers I work with. Every single one of them was hilarious, talented, clever and wise, with that human ability to go on, survive and thrive which I found humbling every day. Hard political polemic doesn't work to change minds in the mainstream, and neither do lists of facts. But people will always remember a human story.”
The Plymouth International Book Festival is back once again, bringing words and books to life across Plymouth. Organised through a partnership of Plymouth University, Peninsula Arts, Literature Works (the literature development agency for the South West) and Plymouth City Council, it will unite local and global authors in a celebration of writing and reading for everyone to enjoy.
This 2015 programme includes exciting, new novels from bestselling authors Simon Scarrow and Judy Finnigan, stimulating non-fiction from Bidisha, spoken word from the always entertaining John Hegley, and a Writing For Radio workshop from the multi-talented Paul Dodgson and Edson Burton.
Also this year, we not only have some of the greatest literary talents of our time, but an opportunity to meet before or after events and mull over your literary passions and experiences. You'll be able to relax in our 1950s-style café, Chez Paulette, and for the first time, we have events programmed in The House – Plymouth University’s performing arts building.
While the majority of the festival events will take place at Plymouth University, a number of city organisations are also putting on related literary events. These include the Counter – Artists’ Book Fair at Karst, a book binding and illustration workshop at Plymouth College of Art, reading events for young people provided by Plymouth Library Services, the Flash Fiction Slam at The Athenaeum and other book events at PCQ Arts and Flameworks.
We would like to thank Arts Council England for once again supporting the festival, The Duke of Cornwall Hotel for looking after our writers and Waterstones for providing the festival bookshop.
