Trainee podiatrists from the University of Plymouth will be showcasing their profession at the Prospects Skills Show in Plymouth on 13 and 14 March.
Plymouth is one of nine universities in England providing the BSc Hons Podiatry course.
Podiatry, the specialism in the foot and lower limb, supports patients throughout assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, and offers great career opportunities for young people and mature students interested in a health career.
“Podiatry is a great career choice for anyone who wants to work with people and make a difference to their wellbeing. It offers you a varied career where employment opportunities are high. I have seen students graduate and go on to successful careers in the NHS, private practice and working with the Ministry of Defence. A podiatrist requires a caring and compassionate nature and to be an excellent problem solver.”
However, according to data collected by The College of Podiatry, student numbers for podiatry courses have been declining in England. The South of England has seen the biggest decline in student numbers - 49% since 2008.
Students are hoping to attract greater numbers to the profession and will be discussing podiatry and allied healthcare careers at the event.
Helen Jones, a third-year podiatry student at the University of Plymouth said:
“The University has provided me with an opportunity to pursue my career aspirations and the quality of lecturing is of a very high standard. My interest in podiatry began after completing vocational learning in anatomy and physiology, giving me an insight into health care. This motivated me to progress as a podiatrist and apply my skills and caring nature to have an impact on patients’ health and wellbeing.”
Representatives from the University of Plymouth are taking part in the ‘I See The Difference’ campaign, which focuses on careers in the allied health professions – health careers in roles such as podiatry, speech and language therapy and osteopathy, to name a few. They will be at the Prospects Skills Show at Plymouth Pavilions on 13 and 14 March.
