This popular annual event, held on 14 June, took place to welcome the new Lord Mayor into their role. Steeped in history, with this year's theme celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Amalgamation of the Three Towns - Devonport, Stonehouse and Plymouth, the University opened the gates to its historic site Drake’s Place Gardens, which re-opened the day before. Activities on the lawn started from 9.30am with face painting, entertainment and the chance to shoot a few hoops with University of Plymouth Raiders Basketball Team.
Elaine Budd, Community Engagement Co-ordinator said: “This is an important part of Plymouth’s heritage and the University is proud to be working with many partners. We are proud to be able to show off another piece of history right here in the heart of the city. With a number of events connecting communities in the three towns for Lord Mayor’s Day, Community Open House and more throughout the summer, we want people to take advantage of what is right here on their doorstep.”
Spectators lined the streets for the walking parade which left University of Plymouth at 1pm, through Cornwall Street and into New George Street, finishing at the city centre piazza to meet the new Lord Mayor Councillor Michael Fox.
Other events supported by the University in the city included the Big Food Event from 10-14 June to celebrate good food on our shores with tasters and cookery demonstrations, and the prestigious sailing regatta La Solitaire du Figaro from 11-15 June.
