Hanna Williams

A University of Plymouth nursing alumna has been promoted to a senior position at Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre in Plymouth.

Hanna Williams, who qualified with an Adult Nursing Diploma in 2010, will be taking up the role of Day Surgery Unit and Endoscopy Manager.

Her first nursing roles were at Derriford Hospital, rising to junior sister in colorectal surgery. Since graduating she has gained experience and skills in colorectal, general, orthopaedic, ophthalmology and ENT surgery as well as endoscopy services.

Joining Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre in 2015 as Deputy Ward and Day Surgery Manager, Hanna’s promotion will see her overseeing a busy day surgery operation as well as a new and growing endoscopy service – the latter the focus of investment with the creation of a new endoscopy suite and minor operations theatre earlier this year.

Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre is the only hospital in the area to offer trans-nasal endoscopy, where a thin tube (endoscope) is passed through the nose rather than down the throat to investigate the stomach. Patients find this a more comfortable procedure which does not promote the ‘gag’ reflex.

Sue Farrell, Head of Nursing and Clinical Services at Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre, said:

“We are very pleased to be able to promote Hanna to this management role. She is deserving of the position and a good example of someone who has made the most of the career development opportunities we have been able to offer. Developing and nurturing our own home grown talent gives every member of staff the opportunity to become the very best at what they do.”

In the 12 months to September 2017 Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre carried out 6,245 NHS surgical procedures for patients across the South West. It is the first hospital of its kind to achieve an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission.

Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre offers a range of care options including orthopaedic, cataract and general surgery and endoscopic investigations. If your GP agrees that you need treatment you can ask them to refer you to the hospital for treatment – it is part of your choice as an NHS patient.
