Almost 160,000 doctors across the UK are being surveyed for their views on medical revalidation, so that the results of survey can be used by the General Medical Council to help shape the future of the process.

Leading the national team carrying out the survey is Dr Julian Archer from the Collaboration for the Advancement of Medical Education, Research and Assessment at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

In an interview with BMJ Careers, Dr Archer argues that the survey will give his research team, and ultimately the GMC, a real understanding of how revalidation is working in practice – what’s good, what’s not so good, regional and professional variations, and what might be improved.
