A doctor with a passion for helping young people gain vital access to services been named GP Trainee of the Year at the General Practice Awards 2017. 

Dr Pippa Le Page, GP Education Fellow in the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD), was nominated by her supervisors at Beacon Medical Group for her outstanding commitment to helping young people access the help and advice they need, in particular regard to mental health and sexual health.

She picked up the prize at Royal Lancaster, London alongside other category winners from all over the UK. 

Working alongside Professor Richard Byng, Professor in Primary Care Research and Deputy Director of the National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC), Dr Le Page delivers teaching sessions on the University’s undergraduate medical programmes. 

Among her achievements while working with Beacon Medical Group, Dr Le Page organised the Children’s Commissioner Takeover Challenge day at BMG’s Plympton Health Centre last year. 

This national initiative saw businesses from all over England open their doors to children and young people to take over their adult roles in a fun and engaging way, and Dr Le Page took it upon herself to arrange a behind-the-scenes ambulance and pharmacy tour, as well as encouraging the students to give their valuable insight on how health services could be improved.

On winning the award, Dr Le Page said: 

“I’m delighted and honoured to have been nominated let alone actually win GP Trainee of the Year. It’s all thanks to the amazing teams around me.”

Professor Richard Byng said: 

“Pippa has been an asset to the Community and Primary Care team here at the University, and we’re so proud of her award win.”

Dr Jonathan Cope, Pippa’s supervisor at Beacon Medical Group, who was named the 2016 GP of the Year, added: 

“Pippa has given us her relentless positive energy and it’s been a privilege to have helped her along her way. She’s got a bright future ahead and is a great role model for others.”
