The Cataract and Refractive Surgery Research Laboratory
Cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the most common surgical procedure with approximately 400,000 performed every year within the UK.
The Cataract and Refractive Surgery Research team at the University of Plymouth conducts both in-vivo and in-vitro investigations to examine the efficacy of IOL designs and the surgical techniques used to implant them. The team has developed new outcome measures for the clinical assessment of IOLs which assess; visual function, the subjective perception of vision, and the stability of the IOLs within the eye. In addition, the team uses their experience of applied optics to assess the optical quality and structural integrity of IOLs using both computer modelling and optical bench testing. The “real world influences” of IOL implantation on factors such as mobility and balance are assessed in collaboration with interdisciplinary research teams within the school of health professions.
