Innovations in Liver Services
The South West Liver Unit is leading in developing innovative services for patients with liver disease. We are working collaboratively with service users and partners in NEW Devon CCG, NHS England, South West Academic Health Science Network (SWAHSN) and PenARC to support and evaluate these innovations. Active projects include:
South West Peninsula Hepatitis C Operational Delivery Network
This regional network, led by Professor Matthew Cramp manages allocation and delivery of direct acting antiviral drugs for treatment of Hepatitis C Virus infection.
Outcomes Based Commissioning Demonstrator for alcohol services
This programme is working with NEW Devon CCG and social investors to improve access and delivery of alcohol treatment services, supported by the SWAHSN.
‘SWAHSN Holds Hackathon in Exeter to Reimagine and Improve Pathways for Alcohol Dependent People’.
Community Hepatology Services
Innovative pathways for community management of early and advanced liver diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), ascites and encephalopathy are being established.
Fatty Liver Pathways
Dr Sheridan conducted the first National Survey into the management of NAFLD, making some key recommendations to improve assessment and management of NAFLD in the UK – key research publication.
This work contributed to the publication of ‘Guidelines for the assessment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)’ by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
