Dental CPD: courses for dental professionals

Welcome to the continuing professional development courses for dental professionals run by the University of Plymouth, Peninsula Dental School.
We offer a range of high quality dental CPD courses for dental professionals, based upon teaching that we already provide in our popular MSc programmes. The teaching is delivered by highly experienced specialists and consultants, who are renowned nationally and internationally.
Dentistry work experience 

Our programmes all operate on a blended learning model, combining work at home with taught contact days on University premises

MSc Restorative Dentistry 

While continuing to work and study in practice, you will attend 20 days teaching in years 1 and 2. You will develop your skills in restorative dentistry, including:
  • treatment planning
  • endodontics
  • periodontology
  • fixed and removable prosthodontics
  • implantology.
Year 3 is the dissertation year, when you learn to apply the teaching that you will have received in searching for and appraising the dental literature. You will choose a research question relevant to your practice and investigate this, with support from the University team, finding and assessing evidence and forming robust conclusions.

School of Dentistry

MSc Oral Surgery 

Similar to the MSc Restorative Dentistry, you can continue to work and study in practice and attend for 20 days teaching in years 1 and 2. You will develop your skills in oral surgery, including:
  • case assessment
  • imaging
  • treatment of medically compromised patients
  • oral surgery for impacted teeth/roots and implant surgery
  • oral medicine relevant to minor oral surgery.
Year 3 is the dissertation year when you learn to apply the teaching that you will have received in searching for and appraising the dental literature. You will choose a research question relevant to your practice and investigate this, with support from the University team, finding and assessing evidence and forming robust conclusions.
Dentistry

MSc Periodontology 

While continuing to work and study in practice, you will attend 20 days teaching in years 1 and 2. You will develop your skills in periodontology, including:
  • treatment planning
  • treating patients with complex medical or restorative issues
  • non-surgical periodontal treatment
  • surgical periodontal treatment, including pocket reduction and mucogingival surgery
  • implant placement, restoration and aftercare.
Year 3 is the dissertation year, when you learn to apply the teaching that you will have received in searching for and appraising the dental literature. You will choose a research question relevant to your practice and investigate this, with support from the University team, finding and assessing evidence and forming robust conclusions.

New course – MSc Endodontics 

Led by a team of consultants and specialists, this programme is structured to allow you to continue your current working commitments while studying for this postgraduate degree at an appropriate pace. Each module consists of 300 total learning hours – 80 hours of direct contact and 220 hours in own practice preparing cases, allowing the flexibility to be balanced with existing work commitments. 
The programme will guide you in developing:
  • skills in assessing and managing patients with endodontic problems due to trauma or resorption
  • the assessment and management of endodontic problems in children/adolescents 
  • the ability to produce a project dissertation under supervision demonstrating clinical question formulation, evidence acquisition, evaluation and synthesis within a clinical context and an ability in decision making and critical reflection skills in relation to a patient requiring endodontics.

MSc Orthodontics 

  • Led by a team of specialists in orthodontics and complemented by respected visiting clinicians and educators.
  • Structured to allow participants to continue their current working commitments while studying at an appropriate pace.
  • Each module at PG Certificate and PG Diploma stages includes consultant/specialist led supervision and clinical time to facilitate the demonstration, assimilation and practice of taught clinical techniques.
  • The course allows case assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, patient management and practical clinical techniques to be learnt, underpinned by an appraisal of the evidence base, so that participants gain the skills to practice critically and effectively in their own dental practices.
Orthodontics

The FGDP Articulation route 

This MSc top-up programme is a collaboration between Peninsula Dental School and the Faculty of General Practice (UK) that allows holders of the FGDP (UK) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry to join the third and final year of our highly regarded MSc Restorative Dentistry programme. 
 
Course details
The FGDP Diploma is recognised as potentially contributing 120 credits towards the University of Plymouth MSc in Restorative Dentistry. 
Successful applicants attend two preparatory days in the autumn before joining the dissertation module commencing in January. 
The dissertation runs over seven study days between January and September each year and provides the final 60 credits required to obtain the MSc.
Key features
  • Postgraduates undertake project work which is supported by expert supervisors and online teaching materials.
  • Supervision is flexible to suit the needs of the postgraduates and can take on a place face to face basis or remotely (e.g. via Skype and email).
  • Postgraduates receive feedback on draft work submitted regularly throughout the course to prepare them for submission of their final dissertation.
