Enterprise Education

Plymouth University, ‘The Enterprise University’, embeds enterprise throughout all of its teaching and research activities. Universities’ roles in encouraging the development of enterprising graduates have been perceived by policymakers as a route to increasing the UK’s global economic competitiveness. In a sector where funding cuts continue and students are more diverse than ever before, the need for research into enterprise education delivery and effectiveness is more pertinent than ever.

Alongside the degree programmes, modules and extracurricular activity we offer to support student entrepreneurship, the centre is also engaged in research regarding enterprise education, student entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial learning.

Dr Andreas Walmsley has a longstanding interest in graduate entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education. He has published numerous academic papers in this area, most recently co-authoring two papers on the topic: The first a systematic review of the impact of enterprise education in higher education published in Academy of Management Learning and Education, the second an investigation into the impact of enterprise education in the first year of higher education published in Studies in Higher Education.

Andreas has worked on a number of commissioned studies for a range of UK subject associations, the Higher Education Academy and also the International Labour Office in Geneva. Much of his research has been within the context of the service industries, particularly tourism. This has led to his being commissioned to write a book for the publisher Routledge entitled Entrepreneurship in Tourism (his first book published by Goodfellow Publishers in 2015 Youth Employment in Tourism and Hospitality: A Critical Review also includes a review of graduate entrepreneurship within the tourism sector). Currently Andreas is teaching on modules relating to contemporary issues in entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship in developing and emerging economies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
