University of Plymouth Press (UPP) publishing intern.
Publishing is a truly interdisciplinary subject. To be successful in the industry you need to combine creativity with commercial thinking, and marry business acumen with an understanding of good design. It’s a varied and stimulating career, with something for everyone.
Our undergraduate (BA (Hons) English with Publishing) and postgraduate (MA Publishing) modules reflect this diversity of activity. As a student on one of our courses, you will have the opportunity to learn practical editorial, production and design skills, become proficient in project costing and management, build an understanding of core marketing principles and explore how the industry is setting a new digital agenda. We encourage an interest in academic debate and a curiosity for trends alongside the development of vocational skills.
Overall our focus is on employability, with many graduates going on to join top companies in the field. Our students undertake work placements, engage with live publishing projects, travel to national industry events, attend seminars and guest lectures with subject experts, and build a network of professional contacts. We benefit from excellent facilities on site, ranging from artisan studio spaces (the University is home to one of the only letterpress workshops in the country) to cutting-edge Mac design suites. We boast the University of Plymouth Press, too, whose varied programme allows students to see publishing in action, immerse themselves in the regional arts sector and work directly with a range of clients and suppliers.
Previous graduates have joined us from a broad range of academic backgrounds, and we welcome international applications. Our students are known across the sector as enthusiastic, engaged and knowledgeable, and we’re proud of how positive they find their experience with us. In their own words:
"The programme focuses on the student becoming a publishing professional with the necessary skills and ability to work within any publishing business. Job offers are circulated regularly, and that has allowed me to focus on the future while working to achieve the best from the programme. Having a masters in publishing from the University of Plymouth is a huge advantage when launching a successful career in the wonderful world of publishing."
Siobhán Prendergast, MA student 2019
"I decided to do MA Publishing after my BA in Illustration, also at University of Plymouth. It's the best decision I've ever made!"
Isabel Fitchitt, MA student 2019
