Overview:

Andrew J. Manning is a Lecturer in Coastal & Shelf Physical Oceanography at University of Plymouth (UoP) in the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, where he currently leads three modules. Andy is the co-ordinator for the UoP Marine Science (Ocean Science) Programme ‘Applicant Days’, and ‘Open Days’ events (since 2012). Andrew is a member of both the Marine Physics Research Group and UAE Oceans Research Team at UoP.

Andrew has over two decades of experience examining sediment transport processes in both: i) the controlled environment of laboratory simulations (including annular flumes), and ii) conducting in-situ sediment transport field work campaigns (many dredging orientated) in a wide range of coastal, inner shelf, estuarial, deltas, lakes and other inland waterways, both within the UK and internationally, particularly across Europe and the USA.

Andy’s field work locations include: San Francisco Bay system (USA), the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta (i.e. the northern Californian River Delta, USA), Seine /Loire-St.Nazaire / Gironde Estuaries (France), Tamar / Severn / Dee / Orwell / Humber / Portsmouth / Thames Estuaries (UK), Port of Zeebrugge /Port of Antwerp (Belgium), and Lake Apopka /Lake Tahoe (USA).

Andy is also a Principal Scientist (Rank Grade 9) in the Coasts & Oceans Group at HR Wallingford Ltd (HRW). He has 15 years experience at HR Wallingford where he specialises in sediment transport and cohesive sediment flocculation processes. Andrew has developed the highly successful LabSFLOC-1 and LabSFLOC-2 high resolution underwater video floc camera systems. Regarded as a benchmark device for floc population sampling, LabSFLOC permit the simultaneous measurements of floc sizes and settling velocities for entire floc populations within a wide range of aquatic environments.

In addition, Professor Manning Guest Lectures at a number of academic institutes, including Stanford University CA on the MSc in Civil & Environmental Engineering, and University of Delaware. Andrew is currently supervising more than ten PhD students, many based at international institutes (including: University of Adelaide, Australia; Stanford University, CA, USA, SKLEC East Normal University, China; TU Delft, Netherlands, University of Delaware, QMUL). Andrew has also international examined five PhDs. Since 2011, Andrew has been supervising projects for over 15 MSc / MRes postgraduate students and more than 25 BSc undergraduate students.

Andrew was awarded a UoP Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellowship in 2007, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 2004. He contributed submissions to both the RAE (2008) and REF (2013) UK academic research assessments at UoP. In 2015 Andrew was awarded the ‘Exemplary Act Award’ by the United States Department of the Interior & U.S. Geological Survey in May 2015 (http://www.hrwallingford.com/news/hr-wallingford-scientist-receives-us-government-award-for-heroism).

Andrew has been successful in securing over £6.2M (combined grant totals) in research funding since 2002; Principal Investigator (PI) on more than 25 research and consultancy projects, and Co-Investigator (CI) on a further 15 projects collectively at UoP and HRW. Andrew has contributed to more than 90 peer reviewed scientific articles, of which nearly 40 have been published in international scientific journals. This includes editing two books on sediment transport and global science (Intech, Vienna; 2011 2013, and 2016); combined total of book and chapter > 70,000 downloads. Andrew was an Associate Editor for the Springer journal ‘Ocean Dynamics’ (2011-13) and is currently an Associate Editor for the Elsevier journal ‘Estuarine Coastal Shelf Science’ (2013 to present).

Andrew has chaired sessions and presented scientific papers at over 60 international conferences and technical workshops. He has served on the International Coastal Symposium Scientific Committee, as the ‘Deltas & Estuaries’ Session Convener (2007 and 2013), where he edited all D&E papers for the Journal of Coastal Research ICS special issues. He was a Key Note Speaker at: British Sedimentological Research Group (BSRG) conference, NOC-S, Southampton (2010); Particles in Europe, Bologna, Italy (2008); Sediment Transport in European Estuaries, Uni. of Ferrara, Italy (2002); American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2015, San Francisco, USA. Andrew has been a part-time member of the INTERCOH (International Conference on Cohesive Sediment Transport Processes) Steering Committee since 2011. Session Co-convener for European Geosciences Union (EGU) conference, Session ‘OS2.4’: Advances in Physical Estuarine Processes’ (2014 to present). Session Convener at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) since 2016.

Teaching interests

Andy has been lecturing and supervising dissertation projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels since 2001. Andrew is currently leading three modules and teaches many practical aspects of his modules from onboard research vessels.

In addition, Andy regularly Guest Lectures at a number of overseas academic institutes, including Stanford University CA USA on the MSc in Civil & Environmental Engineering, and University of Delaware USA on MSc in Coastal Process and Applied Modelling. Andrew has lectured on UoP short courses on ‘Estuarine Processes’ for Environment Agency staff (June 2010 and July 2012). He has also lectured on an ‘Estuaries Processes’ training course for Natural England staff at HR Wallingford (May 2011).

Andy has successfully supervised (one as Director of Studies) four PhDs to completion. Andrew is currently supervising more than ten PhD students, many based at international institutes (including: University of Adelaide, Australia; Stanford University, CA, USA, University of Delaware, USA; SKLEC East Normal University, China; TU Delft, Netherlands).
