After qualifying as an Early Years/Primary school teacher at Bishop Grosseteste College in Lincoln, I went on to teach English as a Foreign Language and became a teacher on Crete and following that, at the University of Stockholm. It was during this time that I began to specialise in English language teaching and learning. I worked for a number of years as an English Language co-ordinator in primary schools that had a multilingual and culturally diverse population, teaching bilingual children. From 2005 to 2007 I acted as a Literacy Advisory teacher for Bristol local authority. I worked alongside the Bristol EAL consultant for the National EAL pilot project, helping to train teachers in all aspects of EAL teaching and learning. Following this, I became subject leader for English, language and literacy on the Primary and Early years PGCE programme at Bath Spa University and am presently English Subject Leader for Primary and Early Years English at Plymouth University.
During 2011-13 a colleague and I designed a 2 year research project at Bath Spa University into how 'first place' influenced PGCE trainee teachers' identities as readers and teachers of reading. We presented our findings at the 2014 UKLA International Conference. This research explored the connection between first place and reading from a critical literacy perspective; making links with other subject disciplines such as the field of social and cultural geography and the work of Doreen Massey.
