Mr Jamie Quinn

Technician (Cartographer)

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering)

Role

Cartographer within the GeoMapping Unit

My main role is to produce maps and diagrams for academic staff in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Commonly these are for publications in papers and textbooks, but  also for student fieldtrip handouts and other teaching materials. I teach basic mapping skills to Geographers and Geologists (see Teaching tab), and help out on fieldwork as and when required. The graphic design element of my role contributes to the School in marketing materials, such as the Environmental Science and Geology Newsletters, and I keep the School's Image archive up to date. The School's image archive can be found here:

Teaching interests

I teach mapping skills using Adobe Illustrator software to final year Geologists (GEOL3001).  I help my colleague, Tim Absalom, teach  mapping skills using Adobe Illustrator software to first year Geographers (GGH1200/GGP1200).  I have taught one-off sessions on Poster Design and Graphic Design.

In addition to my cartographic input, I have helped out on various Geography and Environmental Science fieldtrips. In recent years, residential trips have been to Western Ireland, Brittany, Belize and the Pacific North West of the USA. My role on these trips is mostly as a driver, photographer, IT technician and a general helper looking after the equipment and making sure the trip runs smoothly. In May 2019 I will be heading to Western Australia with Final Year Geography Students.
