Dr Kayla Parker

Kayla Parker is an artist film-maker whose research interests centre around subjectivity and place, embodiment and technological mediation, from feminist perspectives, with an interest in the interface between still and moving images, and new materialism. In her practice, she works with film-based and digital technologies to explore the interrelationship between the body and forgotten, liminal spaces.
The recipient of many awards, her experimental moving image artworks have been presented around the world, in touring programmes such as the ICA Biennials, and exhibitions and festivals, with television broadcasts on Channel 4, ITV and the BBC in the UK and in Australia, Canada, France, Austria, and Germany. In the 1990s she is notable for creating innovative animated films, such as the animate! commissioned Cage of Flame (1992) and Sunset Strip (1996), along with As Yet Unseen (1994) for BFI Production, and Project, commissioned for the opening of the Lux Centre in 1997. Her work since 2000 includes the digital films Inner City (2001) for Year of the Artist; Small World (2007), commissioned for the AHRC-funded project between University for the Creative Arts and University of Dundee, screened at the Definitive Stories section of the National Review of Live Art; Teign Spirit (2009), an Animate Projects commission for Sea Change; environmental direct animations such as Flora (2011) and Reach (2014); and Maelstrom (2014), supported by a Moving Image Art Bursary from UWE and RWA. She was awarded the 2016 Nicosia-Plymouth Artist Residency with Stuart Moore hosted by Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC, associated with the Pierides Foundation), Republic of Cyprus - Father-land, the collaborative essay film outcome of the residency, premiered in the Layers of Visibility exhibition at NiMAC, curated by Liz Wells and Yiannis Toumazis, October 2018 to January 2019.
She curates and presents programmes of artists' moving image, such as Bodies of Water for the Royal West of England Academy exhibition, The Power of the Sea (2014), screened at the 2015 Cornwall Film Festival and at Force 8 (2016 and 2017). Other curated programmes include The World Within Us, featuring work by Susan Derges, Penny Grist, and Folake Shoga, for Beyond the Margins, presented by Watershed Media Centre and Skillnet South West (1996). Kayla is a co-founder of Sundog Media, the production company responsible for award-winning short films such as Heaven is a Place (2014), made with the LGBT community in Plymouth for the EU Cultural Programme; Welcome to the Treasuredome, the 2-day festival of 360 artists’ moving image held in a 21-metre dome on Weymouth seafront, for the London 2012 Olympics, which attracted an audience of over two and a half thousand people; and The Other CO2 Problem, with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, winner of the 2009 Bill Bryson Award for Science Communication awarded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
She holds a PhD in direct animation practice and gender, and is a Lecturer in Media Arts at University of Plymouth, where she is a member of the Arts Institute (Research) steering group. The author of several chapters and journal articles on film-making, her publications include a co-authored chapter in Routledge’s Community Filmmaking: Diversity, Practices and Places (2017), and a catalogue essay for the Leverhulme Trust Artist-in-residence TAGSCAPE exhibition at the 2016 Royal Geographical Society Annual International Conference, London. Ongoing research responds to the feminist methodology of British avant-garde artist, Annabel Nicolson: the initial practice outcome, On Location, a hybrid form of landscape cinema, observes a year’s cycle of seasonal changes and meteorological phenomena along a hollow way that forms the stream bed for several springs, in a remote area of rural mid-Devon in Britain (Screenworks, 2017).

2014 Maelstrom HD film capturing the confluence of the histories and lived experience of the rocky promontory on the westernmost edge of Plymouth known as Devil’s Point; commissioned by Centre for Moving Image Research, University of the West of England, and Royal West of England Academy, Bristol; supported by a CMIR-RWA Moving Image Art Bursary.
2014 Reach HD film created by burying 16mm filmstrips in the mud of the banks of the Tamar, in the upper tidal reaches of the river affected by historic arsenic mining activities. Commissioned by The River Tamar Project for the It’s All About the River film festival; additional funding for 360 installation provided by an ICCI Support Fund grant.

Widening participation, engagement and enterprise initiatives include:
Lighthouse 16mm film poem inspired by Smeaton's Tower on Plymouth Hoe, winner of the Animated Exeter Young Ones Award (under 18s category), and the Young Motion Plymouth Award 2012; shortlisted for a Kids for Kids UK film award (Animation category) 2012.
Created with students from the After School Media Club at Sir John Hunt Community Sports College; made possible with generous support from Faculty of Arts Widening Participation, Media Arts, Contemporary Film Practice, and Peninsula Arts with Plymouth University; Sundog Media and Plymouth Arts Centre.
Premiere screening in Jill Craigie Cinema during the 16mm Unravel animation workshop day in the Roland Levinsky Building, presented by Peninsula Arts, 5 November 2011. Selected for the Animated Exeter festival 2012, screened at East End Film Festival (CineEast: Whirlykids programme, 1 July 2012), and shown in secondary schools across County Durham during autumn 2012.

Unity led a series of projects at Plymouth College of Art and Design (PCAD, 2003-06) to improve the learning experience and maximise the level of attainment and progression by BME students, and to promote cultural diversity and establish partnerships with BME organisations in the city; funded by three Ethnic Minority Student Achievement Grant (EMSAG) awards and other grant awards from The Learning and Skills Council. In addition to the programmes of college-wide activities, initiatives included:
· a residency by Punjabi-British artist Chila Kumari Burman
· the recording and release of Beyond Words a hip hop/rap album by Jibi/The Loane Ranger; produced by Kristian Sharpe
· Diversity Day, a collaborative day event at Sherwell Church with the University of Plymouth Students Union (UPSU) during Fair Trade Week, for BME students across Plymouth
· D-Day: a day event at PCAD, celebrating diversity and multiculturalism; with a 40 foot-long outdoor graffiti wall, film screenings, non-stop music and jewellery-making workshops

2009 The Other CO2 Problem clay animation film [DVD] warning of the dangerous impacts of increasing ocean acidification, winner of the 2009 Bill Bryson Prize for Science Communication awarded by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and featured in the speech to parliament given by Linda Gilroy, then MP for Plymouth Sutton, on Energy and Climate Change and Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on day 4 of the Queen's Speech Debate (24 November 2009).
A collaboration with Stuart Moore, Ridgeway School, Plymouth, and Dr Carol Turley and Helen Findlay of Plymouth Marine Laboratory; produced by Sundog Media, commissioned by EPOCA (European Project on Ocean Acidification) with support from University College Plymouth St Mark and St John, and National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth. Previewed at the International Scientific Congress on Climate Change, Copenhagen; premiere screening at The Royal Institution of Great Britain (20 March 2009).
Articles by Kelvin Boot: Helping Planet Ocean in Devon Life; The Other CO2 Problem in Planet Earth online, Natural Environment Research Council; and Plymouth school children and 'The Other CO2 Problem' in SeaVision UK; and Kate Herbert's review in the Ecologist (1 September 2009). The film was broadcast as a public service announcement three times a day on Brazilian TV, and "the European Geosciences Union liked it so much they have ordered 10,000 copies for all their members and it will be part of their education web site" (Dr Carol Turley, Plymouth Marine Laboratory).
2009 Hidden Harm mixed media animated film project exploring the adverse effects of parental or carer substance misuse on children and young people, including generational impacts; with young carer workers at The Zone, Plymouth. The Ofsted report on Plymouth City Council praised the work as "a powerful training DVD for professionals reflecting [the] first hand experiences and thoughts" of children and young people (Care Quality Commission, Ofsted 2010: Inspection of safeguarding and looked after children's services).
2008 There 2 Care: The Voice of Young Carers project focused on the experiences of young carers; with young carer workers at The Zone, Plymouth. Winner of the 2009 Media Innovation Award: Collaboration between Business and Young People.
2005 Perfect World digital film created in collaboration with BME young people and music producer Kristian Sharpe focused on ecological vulnerabilities caused by human development; commissioned by Bristol Natural History Consortium for the Wild Ideas project; made possible by the Inspire SW programme, jointly funded by the South West Regional Development Agency and the European Union.
Nominated for the ‘Panda in the Pocket’ Award - finalist, Jury's Special Selection, 2006 International Wildscreen Film Festival, Bristol.
2000 The HAZ Channel video project investigated 6 key health and wellbeing issues for the city of Plymouth; with service users, healthcare providers and stakeholders; part of the Plymouth Health Action Zone initiative (HAZ); for South and West Devon Health Authority.
1998 to 2002 Documentary Artists for the Greenlink Environmental Arts Project, a ground-breaking urban regeneration public art project in Mount Wise, Devonport, Plymouth; for Arts Council England, South West Arts, and Plymouth City Council. Work undertaken includes a comprehensive 'creative technologies' programme of photography, video, animation, audio, and web-based skills-sharing workshops; the creation of a comprehensive media-based archive in collaboration with the community of Mount Wise, Greenlink artists and professional contributors; and the writing and production of the Greenlink evaluation report.
