Mr Luke McGowan

Senior Learning Technologist

Role

I work as the Senior Learning Technologist in the TELMeD team (Technology Enhanced Learning for Medicine and Dentistry), working within the University of Plymouth's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

My work spans the Medical, Dental, Biomedical Science and postgraduate schools, and it involves:

  • Leading and line-managing a dedicated team of eLearning Developers
  • Co-ordinating the delivery and development of a comprehensive eLearning service
  • Leading in the design, specification, evaluation, dissemination and management of Technology Enhanced Learning and Assessment projects to support Medical, Dental and Graduate Education and professional services within FoMD
  • Writing specifications for and managing complex team projects, employing a variety of project management techniques and tools including Agile (Scrum and Kanban)
  • Bespoke e-resource development and project management, working in collaboration with academics, students and NHS partners. Work includes the development of e-learning packages (RLOs), virtual patients, interactive 3D simulations including VR and AR, photography and video capture and editing, developing mobile and web apps. 
  • Key skills include HTML5, PHP, MySQL, Flash, Unity3D, Adobe Creative Suite and more.
  • Researching new technologies (software and hardware), third party products, services and emerging practices for deployment within FoMD
  • Review and implementation of Quality Assurance processes
  • Supporting lecture capture for events and student sessions for online delivery
  • Provision of training, supervision and authoring of protocols for staff and students in the development and use of resources (hardware, software systems etc), as part of the team's staff development role
  • Promotion of team activities both internally and externally using a variety of tools and communication channels
  • Design for print including conference posters and printed learning resources
  • Development and management of e-resources gateway and content managed e-resource system
  • Staff recruitment - writing job adverts and descriptions, organising and chairing interviews and appointing staff
  • Student IT inductions and digital literacy development
  • Provision and management of a support service for staff and students using tools including the Digital Learning Environment, Turning Point, TurnItIn, PebblePad, Xerte, Form2, Office365, SharePoint
  • Providing guidance on copyright and IPR issues
  • Contributing to research projects and funding applications
  • Representing FoMD at national and international educational conferences (Association for Medical Education in Europe, ALT-C, International Association for Dental Research, Plymouth Conferences)
