My teaching covers Chemical Oceanography and Environmental Chemistry. I also teach a 2nd year course in Weather and Climate and a 3rd year course on Climate Chnage: Imapcts and Responses. I contribute to both the M.Sc. in applied Marine Science and the B.Sc. (Hons) Environmental Science programmes.
I am also involved in teaching estuarine chemistry on small resarch boats. A website has been designed to aid the learning and teaching process. Link to website

My research focuses on trace metals biogeochemistry with particular reference to bioactive metals (iron, zinc, and copper). I am interested in the chemical, biological, and physical processes which affect trace element distributions and behaviour in both coastal and open ocean regimes. This research combines speciation studies, trace metal uptake by phytoplankton and analytical chemistry and is approached from two directions: field measurements and laboratory studies with projects ranging from developing a new analytical method for total dissolved iron determinations, to coastal studies on iron chemistry from both river plumes and upwelling, to large scale mapping of zinc concentrations in open ocean regimes and incubation experiments investigating the biological uptake and speciation of zinc and iron. The laboratory utilizes flow injection analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and voltammetric techniques to investigate the distribution and chemical speciation of trace elements in seawater.
