Dr Nathan Broomhead

Biography

I am a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics at the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. This year I am lecturing courses to the foundation year, the second year and final year students. I do research in algebra and geometry.

Qualifications

PhD in Mathematics (University of Bath, 2009); Thesis title: Dimer models and Calabi-Yau algebras.
MMath (Hons) in Mathematics (Oxford University, 2004); Scholar of Merton College.

Professional membership

I am the London Mathematical Society (LMS) representative for the University of Plymouth.

Teaching

Teaching interests

In the autumn semester I am a lecturer on the modules:

Applied Mathematics (MATH058) for foundation year students.
Algebra and Transforms (MATH2703) for second year students.

In the spring semester I lecture on the final year module:

Geometry and Algebra (MATH3604).

Research

Research interests

I work in the area of algebraic geometry where it intersects homological algebra, representation theory, and theoretical physics. In particular, the study of derived categories of both geometric and algebraic origin has been a running theme of my research. I'm currently particularly interested in derived categories of gentle algebras and spaces of Bridgeland stability conditions.

Conferences organised

In 2023 I organised the conference Quivers, Clusters, Moduli and Stability (a conference in honor of Alastair King’s 60th birthday) at University of Oxford, UK.
In 2021 I organised the LMS Women in Mathematics workshop with Yinghui Wei, Colin Christopher, and Daniel Robertz.
In 2018 I organised a conference on Geometry, Derived categories and Moduli spaces with Marina Logares.

Other academic activities
