Nicola Cluer

Clinical Skills Tutor

Peninsula Medical School (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry)

Role

My Clinical background is in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care, predominantly Cardiac surgery, as a Specialist Nurse.

I have worked within this speciality since 1991 and for the last 16 years have worked on the Cardiac ICU in Derriford Hospital.

After training in Westminster Hospital, London, I spent the first part of my career in numerous hospitals in the city including the The Royal Brompton and The London Chest, before moving to The Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney and The John Radcliffe, Oxford.

After leaving London initially I undertook a full time BSc in Marine Biology at the University of Plymouth, obtaining a 2:1 before returning to a Sisters post in Critical Care.

I have always had a keen interest and active involvement in clinical teaching. I have combined my clinical and teaching experiences and am now part of the Clinical Skills teaching and assessment team for the University of Plymouth's Penninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry / Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry, whilst also maintaining my clinical practice. Working in such a dynamic and evolving educational arena is both challenging and exciting and I hope to continue to develop with the challenges and experience that these roles create.
