Research interests

Collaboration is at the heart of my research and practice. My work is diverse in media and content but all the projects have grown from interdisciplinary explorations which have developed into productive and rewarding collaborations.

I am currently co-chair of the research cluster PUMAr (Plymouth University Media Arts Research).

Women in STEM (2014 - 2015)

This project was developed in collaboration with Professor Camille Parmesan, Dr Stacey DeAmicis and AleTalk Productions and in consultation with focus groups of female STEM based Phd students and female GCSE pupils.

Six case study videos and a promotional video were produced to help connect young women that are still forming their professional goals with femalerole models in STEM subjects. The project aims to giveyoung women greater confidence in pursuing careers and a better understandingof available options and pathways to achieving success.

Journeys to School (2015 - on-going)

An international project in collaboration with Plymouth University's Early Years Unit and psychologist Becky McKenzie, exploring cultural difference through the eyes of children on their journeys to school. This project involves children from very different environments and cultural circumstances across the globe gathering stories and images. Data collection is currently under way and a book is planned to disseminate this rich and diverse material.

Derby Archive of Children’s Art (2015 - on-going)

In collaboration with Dean of Education, Christopher Warren, Derby University.

Derby University hold an archive of children’s art from the 1950s and 60s. This archive is currently in storage. This project aims to organise a permanent exhibition of the archive and locate the original artists to include their stories and subsequent relationship to art.

PUMAr (on-going)

As joint chair of the PUMAr cluster I am involved in the development of the programmes and symposium the cluster delivers. One specific role is as the Plymouth coordinator of an international cultural exchange of media TV programmes due to take place in 2016.

The Media Factory (Future)

In collaboration with Media Arts staff and the PUMAr researchcluster, it is proposed to develop a socially inclusive, creative media initiativecalled the Media Factory. This would be a hub for a range of media relatedactivities aimed at engaging diverse audiences in Plymouth and the South West.

Thematic explorations of Media Arts will be offered through events, workshops, screenings, publications and exhibitions. The Initiative aims to engage peoplein an informal social way as well as taking part in a range of structured activities. It is important that the Media Factory has an open, fully participatory ethosand is seen as an accessible and attractive for a wide ranging audience, from localcommunity groups to researchers and industry professionals.
