Professor Richard Yarwood
Profiles

Professor Richard Yarwood

Professor of Human Geography

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Role

I am a Professor in Human Geography with teaching and research interests in social and rural geography.

I am the programme leader for our MSc in Human Geography Research and a pathway lead for Human Geography in the ESRC’s South West Doctoral Training Partnership. I am the school liaison tutor for Geography at Plymouth and welcome requests from schools for visits or talks.

Qualifications

  • 1990 BA (hons) First Class, University of Wales, Aberystwyth
  • 1994 PhD on 'The Impact of Locality Change and Restructuring on the Urban Hierarchy of the Middle Welsh Borderland' University of Wales, Aberystwyth

My first academic post was at the University of Worcester (then Worcester College of Higher Education), where I spent over seven years as a lecturer in Rural Geography. During this time I established the Centre for Rural Research to co-ordinate and promote research in rural geography.

In 2001 I moved to the University of Plymouth to take up a post as a lecturer in Human Geography. I became a Principal Lecturer in 2004, a Reader in 2007 and was promoted to Professor in 2017. My inaugural lecture was on ‘Citizen Geographies, Citizen Geographers’ and reflected some of my long standing teaching and research interests in geography. During my time at the University of Plymouth I have served as Admissions Tutor for Geography and Director of the University’s Social Science Doctoral Training Centre.

I have also been a visiting research fellow at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia; Massey University, New Zealand and the Ruralia Institute, University of Helsinki.

Professional membership

  • Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society
  • Member of the Geographical Association
  • Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

Roles on external bodies

I have served as external examiner at Trinity College Dublin; the University of West of England and Kingston University. I currently serve as external examiner for Cumbria University and the University of Northampton. I also acted as external validator for geography degrees at York St John and the University of Cumbria.

I am an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and have undertaken various committee roles for the Rural Geography Research Group. I’m also a member of the Geographical Association, serving as editor for their flagship journal ‘Geography’ and helping to establish the South Devon Branch. I have given numerous lectures to branches and welcome invitations to speak!

Teaching interests

I have a wide range of teaching interests. Whilst I specialise in rural and social geography, I also make contributions to broader modules on geographical thought, methodologies and field teaching. I helped established fieldtrips to Bath, Brittany and Sweden and have made contributions to other fieldtrips, from Hong Kong to the USA!

My third year module on the Geographies of Citizenship brings together my research interests in this field and draws on local speakers and field visits to explore the relationship between citizenship and geography. My other specialist module examines The Global Countryside and makes use of Dartmoor to examine key issues affecting rural places.

I established and lead our Masters in 'Human Geography Research', which fulfils the ESRC’s training requirements for doctoral students. I also contribute to the 'Masters in Planning' with a specialist module on Rural Planning.

I recently became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of my teaching quality and contributions to national teaching agendas.

I have served as external examiner at Trinity College Dublin; the University of West of England and Kingston University. I currently serve as external examiner for Cumbria University and the University of Northampton. I also acted as external validator for geography degrees at York St John and the University of Cumbria.

In the past I also served as an A level examiner for WJEC Geography.

I have examined PhDs on a range of topics in human geography, both as internal and external examiner.

Research interests

In the past three years, my work has advanced knowledge and understanding in four key areas of human geography:

Citizenship All of my work applies and develops the concept of citizenship to geography. My work has explored the relationship between the voluntary sector and different urban and rural places. This has included studies of Mountain Resecur Teams, voluntary policing and Street Pasters. My last book, 'Citizenship' was published by Routledge in its agenda-setting series on ‘Key Ideas in Geography’. This has been followed by  contributions to key reference works and textbooks on the geographies of citizenship.

Spatialities of Policing/Emergencies.  I have contributed to work on the geographies of policing. Recent work has examined the growth of private and voluntary policing (Nuffield, British Academy )  (Yarwood 2015, Middleton and Yarwood 2015, Paasche et al 2015, Yarwood and Paasche 2015, Yarwood).

Military Geographies I have been involved in three research projects on military geographies: a study on veterans, resulting in two papers  (Herman and Yarwood 2013, 2105); another on military families (funded by local authorities) that has been presented at UK Army Headquarters; and another on the representation of the military through models (Yarwood 2015).

Rurality Society and Nature. My on-going work on dementia contributes to the theorisation of rural citizenship and the development of policy. I also completed an innovative study of Green Burial sites (funded by Seale Hayne Trust) in the UK to understand sustainable ‘deathstyles’ (Yarwood et al 2015) I continue to make contributions to the field of animal geographies  (Sellick and Yarwood 2013).
