Biography
Biography
Cadet training with BP Shipping Ltd between 1974-1978, as one of the pioneering generation of young women in the UK fleet. A further eight year’s experience as a deck officer with BP on oil tankers, and FT Everard & Sons Ltd on coastal bulk carriers. Class I Master Mariners Certificate of Competency: service in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) at HMS Vivid in Plymouth.
Lecturer in Maritime Business at Plymouth University since 1998 . PhD in “Socio-economic Aspects of Commercial Ports and Wharves in Southwest England: A Grounded Theory Approach to Regional Competitiveness”. This was followed by an award-winning KTP project with Falmouth Harbour Commissioners.
Programme Leader at postgraduate level. Involved in innovative teaching, organising field trips in the UK and abroad, placement tutoring in the UK and Hong Kong, research supervision and examination, conference organisation, international collaboration programmes in Athens, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and external assessment/examination of taught courses in the UK, Hong Kong and Germany.

Adviser to Dinwoodie, J (PI Plymouth, WP4 leader), part of the EPSRC Low Carbon Shipping Consortium, A Systems Approach to Low Carbon Shipping”. 1/1/10 to 31/12/12. A collaboration of six UK universities and 20 industry partners led by University College London. Valued at £1,700,000.
Knowledge Base Supervisor for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (no. KTP007098) between the University of Plymouth and Falmouth Harbour Commissioners. 1/10/08 – 31/3/11. The partnership aimed to develop and embed a framework for sustainable port operation and development within an evidence based approach to environmental and socio-economic issues within Falmouth Harbour. £144,795 ( Funded by FHC, SERC and NERC). This completed KTP project has been judged as ‘outstanding’.
