Teaching

Teaching interests

Thomas leads the BA (Hons) Fine Art programme.

Thomas's expertise in teaching revolves around moving image and filmic projection, photography, installation art, sonic arts and socially engaged art practices. He leads the majority of 3rd year BA Fine art modules, and is also the personal tutor for students on stage 3 of the programme.

Thomas supervises Res-M art and, PhD students in Art and Media.

Research

Research interests

Dr Thomas Baugh employs film, projection, sound and photography to produce visual equivalences of diagnostic and non-diagnostic discourses, which surround obsessive-compulsive disorder. By questioning the distinction between the body and mind, Thomas's artistic research attempts to make manifest how mimicry, through immersion, in the context of installation, can act a mechanism and method for another person to access the mind – body dichotomy to question the value of equivalence, in artistic and medical contexts. In doing so, Thomas’s research aims to provide alternative responses of understanding mental health that are accessible, empowering and non-stigmatising and that lead to recovery and autonomy.

Thomas is also the ECR research strand leader for medical humanities within the school of Art, Design and Architecture.
