Welcome to your first year in the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth, and if you are new to the city, welcome to Plymouth. You are starting on a fascinating intellectual and academic journey with us, as well as an exciting new stage of your life. I hope that you enjoy the journey, and make the most of all the opportunities that the University has to offer.
Your first week here is called Induction Week, during which there will lots of timetabled events. These are aimed at providing you with important information, helping you to become familiar with the University, and giving you the chance to meet some of your fellow students and tutors. There is a full timetable of events listed below. Please read it carefully, and ensure you attend the sessions.

14.00-14.15 Introduction to Student's Union - A representative from the Student's Union will outline all the extra-curricular activities you can enjoy, including sports clubs and societies, volunteering, and how the Union is the hub of social life whilst studying. They also provide your student support and representation.
14.15-14.45 Plymouth Award 2017 - Employability Service: The Plymouth Award is designed to recognise and celebrate student achievements outside the curriculum. The Plymouth Award is one way of recognising the value that we place on these contributions and the learning and personal growth that students gain from these activities.
14.45-15.00 Student Funding Unit - An introduction to the support and advice the Student Funding Unit can provide about all aspects of student funding.
All Students: This morning before your first Induction session find out who your Personal Tutor by accessing the BSc Psychology 0191X Programme site on the DLE (Digital Learning Environment) via the link below, open the tutorials folder and follow the instructions.
Go and find your tutor's office on the 2nd floor Portland Sq Building and sign up for an initial meeting with them on Wednesday morning, fitting it around your Induction timetable.

NOTE: Some tutors may need to make alternative arrangements, so keep checking your University email account for any messages. If you are unable to meet your tutor for any reason, please email or phone them (contact details are in the Stage 1 Handbook) to arrange an alternative time.

9.00-12.00 Meet your Personal Tutor: meet with your Personal Tutor in their office during these times, you will have signed up to meet them yesterday.
13.00-15.00 Staff Research Interests Venue: Roland Levinsky Building, Lecture Theatre 1
This afternoon consists of talks by a few of our academic staff on things that fascinate them in psychology. Some of the stuff we have to do in induction week can be a little dull, so we thought it worth reminding you of the real reason for being here ….

10.00-10.30 Introduction to the University Library with Joanna Triplett, Information Specialist. A short presentation on the University Library from the Psychology Information Specialist to inform you of the Library's layout, opening times and services, together with an introduction on how to search for books, journals and other materials using the 'Primo' system and the IT Tutorials for help with using Moodle.
10.30-11.00 Technical Facilities and Services with Lynne James, Psychology Senior Technician. An overview of the facilities and services Psychology Technicians can provide during your degree.
11.00-11.15 Welcome Party Promo, Events Team

The drop-in session allow you to learn more about the Student Portal and to practice using it. Simply go to this venue and a member of staff with help you to get started.
You are also advised to check the PSYC101 DLE site for group allocations for workshops and Tutor groups etc. Please make a note of the weeks in which your groups start.
Please note week commencing 25th September is University week 9.

If you're thinking about studying Stage 2 abroad, an Exchange Briefing meeting will be arranged for early November, where you can learn more about studying stage 2 as an Exchange Student. An email will be sent in October with details, so keep checking your University email for this notice.
