Graduate destinations survey

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey is open.

The DLHE survey is important because your opinions will help us to shape our programmes for future students at Plymouth and the results influence how employers view your qualification. So please respond if we contact you to complete the survey!

What is the DLHE?

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) Survey is an annual survey of recent graduates, from all universities and higher education colleges in the UK. The survey is aimed at finding out what you have gone on to do approximately six months after graduating.

The next survey begins on Wednesday 8 November 2017 and runs through to Monday 5 March 2018. If you left the University between 1 January 2017 and 31 July 2017 you will be contacted by IFF Research on behalf of the University between those dates to take part in the survey.

To complete the survey, all you have to do is follow the link provided in the email sent to you by IFF Research on behalf of the University.

Why is it undertaken?

All universities are legally required to provide statistical information on the destinations of leavers six months after graduation to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

The information gathered in the survey provides helpful labour market information to assist the University to plan its future provision and provide support to current students who may be graduating soon to make course and career choices.

Will everyone be contacted?

The survey covers full-time, part-time, UK, EU and international graduates from undergraduate and postgraduate courses and the same questionnaire is used for everyone. HESA will tell us who to include in the survey.

We may know what you are doing because you have returned to the University for further study, you may work for us, or you may have kept in contact with your tutor, lecturer, or the Careers & Employability Service, however we still need you to fully complete the survey. It can usually be completed in about five minutes.

When is the survey completed?

We are required to conduct the survey at two points in the year, once in April and once in January. You will be contacted during one of these slots, not both.

If you are in the January cycle you will receive an email invitation to participate in the survey from 8 November 2017. We will continue to attempt to contact you either by email and/or telephone through to 5 March 2018 when the January survey closes.

All of the data is collated, coded and returned to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) at the end of March.

How will I be contacted and by whom?

The invitation to complete the survey will come via an email from IFF Research on behalf of the University. IFF Research is working in partnership with the University to collect the DLHE survey information on our behalf. The email will be sent to the University and the personal email address that the University holds for you. If we do not hold your personal email address, we will send it just to your University email address.

Our initial email will provide you with a link to click straight through to the online questionnaire in order to complete the survey. It will only take a few minutes to complete.

If we do not hear from you after our initial email, IFF Research will try to contact you on our behalf by phone to give you a chance to answer the survey on the phone instead, so please let us know if you change your email address or phone number.

If you need assistance in completing the questionnaire, wish to opt out of the survey or need to access it in a different format, please contact us at:

What will I be asked?

The survey consists of a series of questions about the employment and/or further study that graduates are engaged in. The questions are very general and should apply to your situation and to your course, but if you have any problem with any of the questions or are unsure about which option to tick, please get in touch with us and we can help you.

Email or call us on +44 1752 587456. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete.

Do I have to complete the survey online?

If you have finished your course six months ago and are in scope for the survey then you can complete the survey online when it goes live from the link provided in the email that you receive from IFF Research on behalf of the University.

If you prefer, you can wait for a phone call from IFF Research and we can complete the questionnaire over the phone with you.

If you don’t want to participate in the survey at all, please tell us. Email: or call us on +44 1752 587456.

What happens to the information?

Any information you choose to give IFF Research on behalf of the University will be held securely and confidentially on our alumni database in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. Data is used to inform the development of University courses and services and will not be disclosed to external organisations either by the University or IFF Research.

The University’s data protection statement can be accessed from the personal information and data protection page on our website.

The DLHE information is provided to HESA in a coded format and is used by them for statutory functions and publications. HESA also supply a summary of the data to third parties such as government bodies, academic researchers and journalists.

All data published by HESA and supplied by them to third parties is kept anonymous so that individuals cannot be identified.

How does completing the survey help the University, prospective and current students?

The data is useful to the University, to:

  • advise its teaching and learning strategies
  • inform its employability strategies
  • support its alumni activities and communications.

The data is used by websites such as Unistats to present Key Information Set (KIS) tables, and by various publications such as the Guardian University Guide and the Times Good University Guide, which can be used by prospective and current students to:

  • make choices around which course to study
  • consider potential career paths.

What can I do before I finish my course?

Before you finish your course it would be really helpful if you could make sure that the University has your up to date contact information (personal email address and phone number) so that you get the chance to take part in the survey. Please complete our online form to update your details.

If you believe you should be included in the forthcoming January survey and you do not receive a communication from us by the end of November, please contact us and we will be able to advise you.
