The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry are pleased to consider applications from highly motivated PhD candidates with an interest in cancer and knowledge of in vitro models, to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally-rated research. The Institute of Translational and Stratified (ITSMED) is at the core of FoMD. ITSMED is translational oriented and works across traditional boundaries. The Institute brings together the world-class research strengths of the University. The candidate would work as part of a team with a successful track record in brain tumour research, including brain tumour cell cultures.(see Stepanova et al Cancer Res 2017, Bassiri et al EBiomedicine 2017, Dunn et al. EBiomedicine 2018).
The studentship is aiming to develop and study a 3D model of meningioma and test available drugs, building on our previous work. The supervisory team brings complementary expertise in translational research, cell biology and neuropathology. Training will be provided for the development to enable the trainee to conduct high-quality and independent scientific research.
Meningiomas are tumours of the meninges and make up 20-30% of all primary brain tumours of the central nervous system. Standard treatment is surgical resection/. Nevertheless, about one third of meningiomas cannot be operated on and current chemotherapies are not effective; therefore, there is a need to identify new drug treatment.
The Faculty is committed to research excellence with a recent £25 million investment in staff and facilities. Medical research at FoMD was ranked first for outputs in REF2014.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates that meet the following criteria:
- Master’s or BSc with significant laboratory experience in relevant area
- A first class or upper second class honours degree
- Some experience in cell culture ideally of primary cultures
- Knowledge of cancer biology or related area
International students must also have an academic IELTS score of 7.0 or above (with no less than 6.5 in any element).
