Our aim is to promote and maintain the health, safety and welfare of the University of Plymouth staff.

We offer a range of services to support staff including:

  • support for staff returning from any period of sickness
  • health surveillance under COSHH 2002
  • advice and support for disabled staff
  • confidential appointments for staff on health issues
  • rehabilitation plans/fitness for work advice
  • workplace/workstation assessments
  • drivers and health screening
  • employment screening.

Stress Prevention and Management

The Health and Safety Executive defines stress as "the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed upon them". Work places demands and pressures on everyone. 

Appropriate amounts can stimulate and motivate but if demands and pressures are too great they can induce mental and physical feelings and manifestations commonly known as stress. 

The University recognises the importance of the prevention and management of stress in the workplace and has developed a number of health and wellbeing initiatives. Further information (link for University of Plymouth staff members only).

Menopause Support Group

The Universities Menopause Support Group was launched in March 2019 for all employees. 

 All genders and ages are welcome to attend the meetings, whether you’re experiencing symptoms yourself and want to meet others in a similar situation or if you would like to understand more about the menopause. 

The University is currently developing a menopause policy and would value any feedback from those attending the group.

The group will have its second meeting on the 30 April in Rolle 116 from 12.30–13.30. Please feel free to bring your lunch. 

Menopause Awareness Sessions are being held at the university on the 16 May. There are two sessions, one for employees and one for managers. Please see the links below for further information:

Employee Assistance Programme

In partnership with Care First (Employee Assistance Programme), the University of Plymouth offers support for all employees on a wide range of issues affecting work and personal lives.

Care First offers an easily accessible 24/7 helpline and online service with access to a range of resources, including:

  • telephone helplines (counselling, information and advice)
  • face to face counselling
  • cognitive behavioural therapy
  • information and advice
  • health and wellbeing
  • mediation
  • critical/traumatic incident responses
  • stress management programmes.

Occupational Health Referrals – Guidance for Managers

The role of Occupational Health (OH) is to support you in managing the health and wellbeing of our employees. The OH Referral process provides an opportunity for you to seek specialist medical advice and guidance where you are concerned about the health and wellbeing of one of your team.
