The University of Plymouth has recruited a team of ten runners for Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon.

The team, made up of University staff, health professionals, and runners from various companies in Devon including Sponge UK, have come together in joint support of the world-leading brain tumour research in the University.

The calibre of the research into brain tumours here led to a successful partnership with the charity Brain Tumour Research so that we became a Centre of Excellence, one of only four in the UK.

Why the team are doing this

  • Brain tumour research is woefully underfunded, receiving just 1% of national spend on cancer research.
  • Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.
  • Around 16,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with brain cancer.
  • At this rate, it will take 100 years for research into brain tumours to catch up with the discoveries made in other cancer research areas.
