Save event

There are a number of opportunities throughout the academic year when the public can come onto campus and see 'behind the scenes' of some of the most inspirational aspects of the University campus - the Marine Building, Formation Zone and the Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre.

Your visit to the campus will include a tour of the Coastal Ocean and Sediment Transport (COAST) laboratory, ship simulator and electron microscopy centre where you can see these facilities in action.

Booking is essential to attend a tour which lasts approximately two hours.

To find out more about the format of the tour and to book a place, please contact

Please see below for information about the facilities included on this tour.

While on campus, why not also spend some time in the historic Drake's Place Gardens and Reservoir? This award-winning community space is a calm and relaxing oasis amidst the whirl of urban living. An accessible welcoming haven and a safe diverse habitat for wildlife. The gardens and reservoir are open to all daily from 7am until dusk (6pm in the winter). Sit back and enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat in our award-winning Reservoir Café.

Today's events

Marine Building

Opened in October 2012, our £19 million Marine Building is an unmatched facility where we can create waves more than one metre high, exchange knowledge for business innovation and growth, create renewable energy solutions and help the world adapt to climate change.

It’s home to the Coastal Ocean and Sediment Transport (COAST) laboratory, the Marine Navigation Centre, the Marine Innovation Centre and our multidisciplinary Marine Institute.

Features that make use of solar gain, natural ventilation and rainwater harvesting are all integrated into the design of the building.

Formation Zone

The Marine Building is also home to Formation Zone, Plymouth's only award-winning accredited business incubator. It supports start-up businesses and social enterprises across a range of sectors, providing a place where new businesses can access the professional advice and supportive environment they need to thrive.

Offering a range of services right through from the idea stage, to growing your business and eventually moving on, Formation Zone is perfect if you have a business idea you'd like to start and develop in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre (PEMC)

PEMC offers expert and specialist support to students, researchers, academics and industry. We have a comprehensive range of light microscopes, electron microscopes, image processing and analysis software providing support to a range of disciplines within the University, external research organisations and industry customers (including aerospace, precision engineering, advanced manufacturing, micro-electronics, photonics, food, geology, bio-medical). Electron microscopy is a fascinating tool, which examines the micro-structure and micro-composition of samples, from soft cheese to meteorites, stainless steel aerospace components to kidney membranes, recently being featured in television programmes such as Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped (5/10/15) and BBC1’s Fake or Fortune (7/7/15).
