The annual Plymouth University Earth Sciences research conference provides postgraduates, postdoctoral researchers and academic staff the opportunity to showcase their latest research in Earth Sciences.

The event is open to all University staff, students and the general public.

Everyone is encouraged to come and learn more about the research that is conducted in Earth Sciences at the University. Come and see what data, methods and insights are used to understand our modern and ancient planet. If you are interested in conducting your own research one day or if you want to see how the skills and knowledge you have gained are being applied in Earth Sciences, then this conference is not to be missed!

We have an exciting programme this year with Professor Christopher Jackson hailing from Imperial College London as our guest speaker. Chris is an expert in the use of 3D seismic reflection data to help better understand the evolution of sedimentary basins.

He will give a talk entitled “3D Seismic Reflection Data: Has the Geological Hubble Retained Its Focus?” and we are very excited about what he is going to present.

Alongside this internationally recognised expert, presentations by Plymouth University researchers will cover a number of topics from paleotopography and sedimentology to ancient oceans and structural geology, with something for everyone! We proudly welcome our new postdoctoral researcher Francesco Giuntoli who will introduce his research on deformation mechanisms in the lower crust of the Swedish Caledonides.

After the event, stick around for our social gathering with drinks and appetisers!

Photo competition
The conference is also a great opportunity to vote for your favourite geological photograph from a shortlist of ten entries entered for the competition. These will be printed and displayed at the conference with the winner voted for by the conference attendees and announced at the end of the event. The successful photograph will then be showcased on next year's Plymouth University Earth Sciences website and displayed in the foyer of the Fitzroy Building.

If you would like to submit an entry for the photo competition, please send an email to the organisers (contact details above) by Sunday 6th November.

The organisers are grateful for and acknowledge the assistance of the Curry Fund of the Geologists' Association.
