Are you looking to improve your marketing skills? Are you looking to increase your business' customer or client base? Would you like to have your skills and expertise recognised and accredited by a top professional management body? Improve your marketing skills with this five-week fully-funded CMI Level 5 accredited course.

The course will help equip you with the expertise needed to run successful marketing campaigns (see below for more information). For business owners, it is a great way to either enhance your own marketing skills or to develop your employees and increase the value they provide to your organisation. In addition, those who complete and pass the course assignment will receive a Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management from the Chartered Management Institute.

Marketing products and services is an activity which can be applied to a myriad of different business contexts. From utilising technology to create new processes and support services to improve the customer experience through to developing or adapting products or services to meet changing needs, the principles of marketing remain the same. The aim of this course is to understand the role of marketing to achieve organisational objectives. You will analyse the marketing environment, understand how to market a product or service and know-how to judge the success of marketing outcomes.

Materials will be provided to learners as well as access to the CMI's Management Direct learning portal, career development centre, and mentoring service.

Course dates

Monday 25 November to Monday 13 January – face-to-face sessions at Taunton Rugby Club and online learning. The course will be delivered using a mixture of face-to-face and distance learning:

Monday 25 November: 9:00–16:00, Taunton Rugby Club: Induction and Face-Face Seminar 1: Evaluate the role of marketing and understand factors in the organisation’s marketing environment

Monday 2 December: 9:00–10:00: Webinar 1 and Q&A: Marketing approaches

Tuesday 3 December: 9:00–11:00 or Wednesday 4 December: 15:00–17:00: Online forum 1 with guided learning exercises: Customer and market segmentation, targeting and positioning

Monday 9 December: 9:00–10:00: Webinar 2 and Q&A: Different marketing approaches

Wednesday 11 December: 9:00–11:00: Online forum 2 with guided learning exercises: New market entry, diversification, co-creation.

Monday 16 December: 9:30–16:00, Taunton Rugby Club: Face-Face Seminar 2: Marketing mix techniques

Monday 13 January: 9.30–4:00: Face-Face Assessment Workshop at Taunton Rugby Club

In addition, you will receive 1:1 support from the course tutor constituting a total of one hour's support per delegate. Please note you will need to attend each of the face-to-face sessions although the webinars will be recorded in case you are unable to make the precise times.

Eligibility criteria

The course is FREE for eligible people who either have a Somerset or Devon postcode or who work for an eligible small-or-medium sized business based in Somerset or Devon. The eligibility criteria for individual participants are as follows:

  • right to work in the UK
  • over 16
  • work in a management or marketing occupation where you can apply what you learn on the course
  • have functional skills in English.

You will also need reliable access to the internet to take part in the online sessions.

Once you have booked onto the course we will contact you to arrange a short interview to check you meet the eligibility criteria. You will need to bring a copy of your passport (or alternative proof of your right to work in the UK) to the first session and complete a project participant form.

Please note that places on this course are subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria above. All courses are subject to participant numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. The University of Plymouth reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient participant numbers are recruited.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and delivered by the University of Plymouth with funding from the European Social Fund's Hidden Talent and Strategic Employer Engagement projects.

Strategic Employer Engagement and Hidden Talent

The Strategic Employer Engagement (SEE) and Hidden Talent projects provide opportunities to unlock unrealised potential through improving access to higher education for businesses and individuals across Devon and Somerset.

Supported by the European Social Fund, the projects bring together educational partners across the region to deliver outreach, engagement and skills development activities to promote and encourage participation in higher-level skills, regardless of ability or education level.
