Plymouth students are joining thousands of others up and down the country as 70 specially designed candles are lit to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The children and young people aged between 5 and 21 will join Plymouth’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Fox as he lights a specially designed candle at the ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day, Tuesday 27 January.

The Roland Levinsky Building at Plymouth University will host a candle designed by Sir Anish Kapoor as part of a national initiative that sees 70 candles lit at Holocaust Memorial Day events across the UK, marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January 1945.

The Lord Mayor will light the candle at 2.30pm to begin a moment of reflection honouring the survivors of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. The event will also see performances, recitals, displays and seminars from a wide range of Plymouth schools and colleges. Plymouth was chosen from hundreds of applications sent to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the charity responsible for marking Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.
