Japan400 Plymouth: Manga! Anime! Illustration!
Save event

A tall ship will sail into Sutton Harbour on 27 September to commemorate the historic homecoming of The Clove 400 years ago. This re-enactment is the centrepiece of Japan400 Plymouth, an eight-day international event that celebrates the historic and cultural links binding the United Kingdom and Japan.

Japan400 Plymouth reaffirms these links and opens new opportunities for exchange, collaboration and discovery.

Illustration workshops and activities

Manga comics are highly regarded as one of Japan’s most important exports, so much so that in 2005, the Gaimusho (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) made it into a key plank of international foreign policy: Manga gaiko (diplomacy through manga comics).

  • Explore Japanese illustration, both traditional and contemporary.
  • Tour the marvels of manga in the Embassy of Japan’s Manga Jiman exhibition.
  • Let loose your artistic talents in an array of workshops and activities for people of all ages.

This event coincides with the Global Japan Culture Showcase and admission is free.

Location: Guildhall, Royal Parade, Plymouth.
