Lych Way Walk
  • Bellever to Lydford

Save event

Join University partners Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth on their new fundraising walk along the ancient route of the Lych Way "The Way of the Dead" from Bellever to Lydford.

Until it was revoked in the 13th century, it was compulsory for interments to take place in the deceased’s own churchyard. The whole of the forest is in the parish of Lydford and funerals were therefore obliged to cross the moor from farms to the churchyard.

The route of 13 miles is a compromise, but as you enjoy the walk, try to imagine the difficult task of carrying a coffin across the open moor and rivers without the benefit of modern fabrics and equipment.

Visit the DSRTP event page for further information and to book your place.

All proceeds are in aid of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth (registered charity number 1106095).

Plymouth University's partnership with Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth

Our longstanding partnership with Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth (DSRTP) is creating valuable opportunities enhancing the Plymouth University staff and student experience.

Acting as casualties and sharing Plymouth University’s modern facilities to enhance the training experience in preparation for real search & rescue missions, exploring collaborative research opportunities supporting DSRTP in becoming the first dementia friendly search and rescue team, this mutually beneficial partnership is making a real impact. The Plymouth University Trainee Scheme has seen students as fully badge search and rescue workers.
