"Matana and Kelly Jayne's performance for OUTLANDS was brilliant and riveting: their overlapping of two spoken voices had a power that vastly outstripped its simplicity as an idea, and the tension they explored through drones, sax, flute and more never faltered despite being heavily improvised. A high-wire, admirably high-minded performance". - Ben Beaumont-Thomas, The Guardian

“Mesmeric” “hypnotic” “extraordinary” “fascinating” - just some of the words used by audiences from the OUTLANDS tour so far!

Join us and KARST on Thursday for a very special series of sonic episodes bringing together US mixed-media composer/saxophonist Matana Roberts and UK improviser and flautist Kelly Jayne Jones. These two artists are from disparate backgrounds, finding affinity in practices charged by fiercely personal philosophies on sound and its potential within a patchwork of genre, texture and meaning. Matana is an internationally renowned composer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist and mixed-media practitioner. Whilst Kelly Jayne Jones makes use of varying combinations of prepared recordings, text, rocks, found sounds and flute.

Matana and Kelly will weave their own approaches into live collaborative works informed by deeply expressive playing, tactile electro-acoustic interplay and a broader shared politics of resistance/defiance.

The duo will also be joined by support act, The Oddstep Deployment Unit. The Plymouth-based band will weave digital recordings and signal processing techniques to create 21st century folk music.

This performance is commissioned by OUTLANDS; The new national experimental music touring network and is supported by Arts Council England and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
