Adrian Fort will discuss the life and times of Nancy Astor, a beautiful American divorcee, who went to England and married a rich aristocrat. She became the first woman to sit in the House of Commons, after her election for Plymouth Sutton.
Seeing herself as heir to the great Plymouth man Francis Drake, she said: ‘You sent out Drake in a little ship to fight for what was right. Now you are going to send a woman, and a little woman at that, to a great place called Parliament where she is determined to be a help and a credit to you.’
Adrian is the author of Nancy: The Story of Lady Astor. His other books include Prof: The Life and Times of Frederick Lindemann, and Archibald Wavell: The Life and Times of an Imperial Servant.
